The Best Book on the Subject

If I could own only 1 book as a guide to this disorder in children, it would be this book, hands down, without a doubt. The first edition was extremely helpful and just bursting with helpful info; this latest edition is even more so.

The updated info on meds is extremely important. The additional information included about "mission mode", sleep inertia, and new IDEA laws are invaluable. The material is very detailed, well organized, and explained in layman's terms. This isn't a book to read for a brief overview of the disorder; it's a book full of the "meat" of all relevant information, in one source. If you're a parent wondering if your child has bipolar disorder, the parent of a newly diagnosed child, or you have already been parenting a child with bipolar disorder, you will find loads of tremendously useful info in this book. It is the "Bible" of early-onset bipolar disorder.

I refer back to this book over and over again. The pages are well worn, folded down at the corners to mark specific topics, and the margins are scribbled with notes. I've never read a book on this subject that was as thorough, accurate, compassionate, and useful.

Just as "What to Expect When You're Expecting" is the must have book for expectant mothers, "The Bipolar Child" is the must have book for parents, caregivers,family members, doctors, teachers and anyone who interacts with or has questions about children with Bipolar Disorder. It is extremelely informative and answers many questions about this illness. I have recommended this book many times over and will continue to do so.

Comprehensive, professional, remote.

Dr. Papalos has assembled a comprehensive set of facts and perspectives about bipolar disorder in children. He describes it as authoritative, and it is. However, I feel the authority at times more than his understanding. Medical explanations and references to research abound, but they tend toward the academic rather than the personal. His clinical vignette's most often rely on other people's work with children and parents. He is immensely informed, but is he truly experienced? I do not get the impression that he has followed a child and family over time through the vicissitudes of this illness and the social consequences it entails.
