Excellent use of imagery
I don't read exercise books. I get my workouts by watching DVDs. I've always felt that having someone
guide
you through the steps, someone you could watch and imitate, was far better than reading about the exercises.
Having read this book, I must admit I stand corrected. While I wouldn't say I've changed my preference for DVDs, this book certainly has contributed to my technique in a big way, and has made me feel I get a lot more out of my
pilates
sessions.
The pictures are clear but it doesn't hurt to have seen the exercises carried out before. Where the book really shines is in the mental imagery used to convey where the focus of the exercise should lie. This really helps you learn to use the appropriate muscles and do the moves correctly.
The principles of Pilates are also really well layed out in the beginning.
Wether or not this is a stand-alone solution depends more on the kind of exerciser you are, but the book is definetly worth a read, even for advanced practicioners.

books and find I refer to this one more than any other that I own. This is truly a cornerstone for reference. Excellent choice for
home
use.

Whether you believe the hype or not about
pilates
, this book presents the information you need to start the mat work right away. There are beginner, intermediate, and advanced exercises available as well as a beginner's routine to get
your
body
used to the movements and positions.
What I like most about this book is that each of the exercises are presented on a single or two page spread, such that you do not have to flip between the pages. All of the notation, pictures, and recommendations for each exercise are included.

If you get only 1 Pilates book, this should be it.
I've had this book for a year and it is the best instructional book I've ever found for
Pilates
or any other excersice. It is detailed and clear in the instruction and photos. Whoever you use for vidoes or classes, this is great suplement to get more details and background on Pilates. I've even taken it with me on trips when I won't have a DVD player or computer so I can do some Pilates at night or in the morning in my hotel room or on the beach or lawn. I looked at the card set, but like the book better since I think I'd end up loosing cards.
Learning about the background and basics of Pilates from this book also helped me choose what I think are better quality instructional DVDs to practice at
home
.
