Super 1990s film noir
This film is undoubtedly one of the tops from the 1990s and certainly the best from 1997. The cast is impeccable. How can you beat Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, James Cromwell, Graham Beckell, David Straithhorn, and Danny DeVito? The story is well told, and the viewer's interest seldom lags. Mind hammering special effects are nil (thankfully), and the audience is led along by the nose in a tantalizing way. There are really no dead spots in this movie, just a great storyline and superb acting. Also, throw political correctness out the window, which is another reason why this film is so original, entertaining and intriguing. Who really shines above and beyond? Nobody. Everyone shines! Yeah. It's that good. This film raises the bar and will remain a tough act to follow. Unfortunately, Hollywood is afraid to make too many of these films. Why? Because tinsel town wants to fashion the world into its only little mold instead of reporting events the way they really are.

Confidential
is a phenomenal film. Originally overshadowed by Titanic, it has come to be appreciated as a modern classic.
The film follows three police officers, Bud White (Russell Crowe), Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce) and Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey)as they investigate a mass murder and become caught up in the events unraveling around them. All three actors give fine, nuanced performances of deeply flawed men. Pearce is the film's surprise--his subtle performance gives Exley depth beyond what is scripted, and we see his character grow over the course of the movie. As Exley struggles to define himself and his beliefs, we are left wondering what direction his character will take, right to the end of the film when Exley faces a moral choice and must decide who he is.
Great screenplay, music, direction--L.A. Confidential is as perfect as any film can be.
