enchanting start of a new series

The Duchess of Stonehaven must face a test, and if she does not triumph, she will forfeit the title to another, and so on. The true Duchess must prove it by not failing, and she must use magic to succeed. Felicity fears the testing because the magic, while present in her, is never strong. Part of it is her own insecurities, her lack of self-worth, fearing people ignore her because there's nothing special or worthy about her. Part of the test deals with thirteen ancient relics conjured by the wizard Merlin.

Terence Blackwell is a shifter, he can also sense black magic which uses the relics. His brother was killed by one of the relics, and it's his life's vow to track them all down. When Felicity enters the testing, the magic exuded by the relic summons Blackwell. Frustrated that he cannot find the ancient item, he knows Felicity is connected to it somehow, and sets out to woo the relics, as it were. Only it backfires on him costing him more than he ever anticipates.

Kathryne Kennedy's debut book for Dorchester is a winner. She demonstrates strong world-building, a well-contracted premise and engaging characters. Felicity and Terence are "real", and quickly engage the reader to caring what happens to them. Obviously, this is the first in the series of Merlin Relic books, and I cannot wait for the second book in the series.

Relics of Merlin.

Set in London, 1882. Do you believe titles (such as Duke, Viscount, and Earl) were simply given to people because of service to the Crown, marriage, or birth? Think again! The higher the title one has tells how powerful the person's magic is. The Royals have the most power. The only power Prince Albert cannot defeat is Relic-magic. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for him to keep Sir Terence Blackwell close. Sir Terence is a baronet and Prince Albert's spy. He cannot use magic, but he is a shape-shifter. The were-kind are immune to magic. Magic can neither harm him, nor fool him into believing glamours. This is vital for Crown's safety. Sir Terence's animal form is a lion and he is able to smell dark magic. His main duty, secondary only to Prince Albert's safety, is to hunt down the thirteen Relic-stones made by Merlin long ago. Six of them have been found.

In Felicity Seymour's world magic is everything. Her parents' magic had been very strong. One would think that Felicity, being the only child born before their deaths, would inherit their power. However, Felicity could not perform even the simplest spell. Yet one man does not seem to mind her lack of dowry: a dark and handsome baronet who had managed to scare away the rest of London's Society misses.

On the day of Testing, Sir Terence smells Relic-magic. He tracks the scent to Felicity Seymour. If Felicity did not pass her testing, she would lose her duchy and any hope of marriage. Though Sir Terence sees no Relic-stone, he could smell the dark power on her. Is she using it herself, or was it being used against her?

***** London has always seemed magical to me and the author, Kathryne Kennedy, casts her own glamour in this story. Not only are there were-kind and magical powers, but there is also a "dragonette". (Picture a small dragon, once hatched, that only grows to the size of a ferret.) Felicity has a dragonette for protection. It cannot fly, but it has lots of sharp teeth and can breathe fire. It is the simple, but fascinating, touches such as this that make the story so enchanting. Every page overflows with romance, fantasy, and suspense. OUTSTANDING! *****

great book!

I picked this up after seeing talked about on a forum and I am glad I. I really am enchanted by Enchanting the lady. Another case of enjoy a book by first time writers. Kennedy's book is a touch of Camelot, a touch of LOTR and pure romance. I loved her characters and just cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

fantastic late Victorian romantic fantasy

In 1882 London, duchess-of-honor Felicity Seymour is worried that she legally will lose her inheritance as she lacks the magical gifts of her parents; Prince Albert's rule states that no magic equates to no duchy. Lion shapeshifter Sir Terence Blackwell enjoys finding ancient relics, but also is a close friend of the Prince, who asked him to participate in the test of Felicity. She ignominiously fails, but Terence feels something was not right as he experiences a trace of relic-magic in use, which makes no sense.

Terence decides to court Felicity somewhat because he is attracted other; somewhat because he feels sorry for her as she is now a pariah like he is as a shapeshifter; and somewhat because what he believes destroyed her test is too similar to what killed his brother. He needs to know whether Felicity is the user or the victim of dark magic. However, Terence never expected to fall in love with her.

ENCHANTING THE LADY is a fantastic late Victorian romantic fantasy that casts a magic spell on the audience from the moment the heroine expects to fail her test and never let's go until the final magical revelation. The story line is fast-paced with an underlying paranormal mystery that enhances the prime romantic plot; the fantasy elements provide a unique look at 1882 England as Kathryne Kennedy provides her readers with a wonderful thriller.
