Great book!

I loved this book! It was one of the most interesting books I've read in a long time and one of my new favorites. I was really impressed with how well the writer was able to describe the world in the book. We get history, backstory, and lots of details explaining how everything works in their society where vampires, fairies, werewolves, and pixies have always existed, but have just recently exposed themselves to the humans.

I loved the main character. She's fun and actually has a really good heart. The author did a great job coming up with interesting supporting characters that really make the story a fun read. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that likes urban fantasy with witches and magic.

So This is Love!!

And no question about that!! This books was a god send! I was trapped in the middle of nowhere. The nearest book stores 3 hrs away! Then I stumbled into a small town, so thirsty, that is for a good read!! (Having long ago run out of reading material.) Surprisingly, a woman owned here own tiny little bookstore. The horror section being the biggest and most prominent, I went in, and found love! I picked up this book thought, "Nice title, sweet out fit! Oooo, look at those pretty handcuffs." From there I was sold. Begging money out of someone, so I could continue the addiction reading the first chapter started.

This was the miracle I've been dreaming of! The writing was incredible, the way the paranormal merged into human society was so clever and flawless! The idea is original and no other author has got a tale like this!!!! This is Urban Fantasy at its best. The plot is incredible, it's witty and dark, the characters have personalities (believable ones at that), and even romance between mink and rat! Ahhhh, and the action!! Had me shaking, screaming encouragements to the fighters! Just thinking about this book (series) makes me go into crazy fan craze!

**** Like love, this is too good to be true!! A rare find that never gets old. I find myself counting down the lonely days without a new adventure with Rachel Morgan. (Of course rereading is always good.) So the writing is great, the plot, characters- a flawless debut novel. And they just keep getting better! Paranormal/Urban Fantasy fans rejoice! All others get on the bandwagon! Cause love is a wild ride!

It's Demon-stratedly Good!

I really dislike Urban Fantasy! Oh - you noticed the four star rating?

This book, and presumably the rest of the series follows suit, demon-strates (I just had to use it again) the genre can rise above the pulp level. The humor is well timed without seeming forced. The book would be run-of-the-mill without it. The events are somewhat predictable and the coincidences hardly believable, but the flow of the story keeps you from noticing too much.

It's the characters that make the book so enjoyable. The interplay among them was what I liked best. The way Harrison set them up leaves lots of room for development in the series. They are the reason I will read more Rachel Morgan.

Better than Anita Blake, but that's not saying much

This book is a guilty pleasure. Read it because you like urban fantasy, or because you like vampires, but don't read it looking for a literary masterpiece. It is entertaining, but it is not particularly well-written.

That said, I expected a cheap Anita Blake knock-off, but I was pleasantly surprised. For one thing, it had a plot. The main character, Rachel Morgan, actually uses her stated powers and does not randomly generate new super-duper powers because of deus ex machina. No sex scenes spontaneously broke out under flimsy pretenses. Rachel makes mistakes and is able to get over them and keep going. Pixies, demons and witches figure in the cast of characters as much as vampires do, including a pixie named Jenks who stole the show with his humorous banter. (If Jenks wasn't already married and only four inches high, he would get my vote for Rachel's love interest, especially since the love interest who gets introduced later is a dull yes-man.)

The gripes I had, though, outweighed most of the above good points. The plot is on shaky ground from the start. She quits her job, so her old boss wants to kill her. Huh? The only way to get her old boss to cancel the fatwah is to buy out her contract. What? I don't know about other job fields, but in teaching if you break contract they just gnash their teeth and tear their hair and give you a bad reference. Apparently in supernatural police work they give other cops a license to kill you. IN PUBLIC. WITH WITNESSES. Right. About half-way though the book I thought, why doesn't she just go to the human cops and tell them that her old supernatural co-workers are after her? Sure enough, she finally does just that about three chapters from the end. *Headdesk.*

Further, the conflict between Rachel and her new roommate and business partner, Ivy the vampire, got very old, very fast. It was irritating to see the supernatural equivalent of an FBI agent or police officer reacting with panic every time she was in the same room as a vampire. The phrases "going vampy" and "pulling an aura" were used an annoying number of times. Yes, I get it. She hates vampires. They scare her, but she knew that before she moved in with Ivy, can we get back to the plot now? Harrison could probably have cut several of these scenes in their entirety and not lost anything of critical plot value, while vastly improving the pacing.

A further gripe is that Rachel is kind of ditzy, keeps getting caught by the bad guys, and yet characters keep describing her as smart, strong and a good detective. Clearly they are not reading the same book I am reading. The worst character moment was when Rachel was captured by her nemesis. She rates the bad guy's butt and goes into alarming detail of his physique.

The book left off with enough loose ends to fuel several sequels, which, from searching Harrison's name, is exactly what happened. But at least she gets her old boss to stop trying to kill her. So to sum up: a guilty pleasure.
