Very funny story, and a very poignant one...characters are particuarly well-drawn, giving an emotional weight to the story

A Dirty Job is, like many of Christopher Moore's other books, laugh-out-loud funny. So much so that Tammie won't let me read it in bed. In this one, though, Moore's characters are particularly well-drawn, giving an emotional weight to the story that's lacking in such previous books as Fluke and The Stupidest Angel (don't get me wrong; those books are well worth reading, too. Humor in print is really hard to do. Witness the myriad Douglas Adams knock offs of the last 25 years). This book is closer in tone to Moore's Coyote Blue, until now my favorite of his novels.

It's about Charlie Asher, a "beta male" who freaks out over anything that looks like it might disturb the order of his little life. Events such as the birth of his child at the beginning of the book really send him over the edge (he's certain baby Sophie has too many fingers and/or toes. When a nurse attempts to reassure him his kid does actually have the correct number of digits - she's counted them ten times for Charlie's benefit - he becomes fixated on the notion that Sophie had a tail which was hastily removed in the delivery room so as to not freak him out). Basically, Charlie wanders through life feeling like someone forgot to explain something major to him. To tell you the event that sets the plot in motion would ruin the rest of the story for you. I'll just say it's a very funny story, and a very poignant one, and if you've never read a Christopher Moore book this is an excellent place to start.

Wickedly funny

A Diry Job by Christopher Moore
This has to be the funniest book ever, as long as you can laugh at death, sex and hard luck! I have never laughed out loud during a book as much as I did with this one. I would recommend it to anyone who is open minded, has a sense of humor and is over 17.
It all begins with the untimely death of neurotic Charlie Asher's wife just after giving birth to their daughter. After witnessing "Death" in the form of a very large black man all dressed in mint green, odd things begin to happen.
The book includes a cast of delightfully odd characters include his lesbian sister, the Goth girl employee, the ex-cop, sewer harpies, hell hound babysitters, and a neighbor lady that will kill and eat anything that moves.

KITTY!

I never laughed so hard while reading a book before. The beginning is a little sad but things do take on their usual "Moore-ish" twist. I loved the "hell hounds". I found my self more than once quoting "strong like bear". The book kept intrigued from start to finish and I hope that there will be a sequel. If you like quirky comedy mixed with surreal moments and dark humour than you will love this book.

A Unique Mix: Black-humor, satire, spiritual reflection, romance and a thriller.

This was my first Christopher Moore book, but it certainly will not be my last. It's as though Carl Hiassen combined with Alice Hoffman. The latter's wonderful attention to the spiritual, the occult and the romantic is mixed with the former's delightful and humorous sense of the outrage and absurdity of everyday life and the plight of everyman, with the ability of both to tell a good story that seems realistic while completely departing from reality.

Moore achieves all of that, while offering his own reflections on life and death and a spot-on, thorough and sympathetic explanation of the "Beta male" type (you know, as opposed to Alpha males).

Expect quirky. This novel is the equivalent of an indie film, so do not go in anticipating a mainstream read. If indie is O.K. with you, though, I highly recommend this book.

Another winner by Christopher Moore

Charlie Asher, a grieving husband and father is given the job of "death merchant" which is in layman's terms a soul collector. It is not a job he wants or was paticularly good at in the beginning but as he becomes more adept at it, he finds that it has it perks and of course it also has it's downside, but don't all jobs, LOL. The perks, invisiblity, hell hounds to babysit his daughter and of course prosperity among other things, the downside, well I guess having the sewer harpies wanting to pull you limb from limb could be considered a downside along with having a daughter that can kill with just a point of her finger and the word kitty. This book is so full of dry wit and dark humor that will find yourself laughing out loud. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark humor and is not bothered by profanity. It is a fun and quick read.
