The Fourth Generation Warfare Godfather

While experts on the 2nd Iraq War give credit for the quick victory to SECDEF Rumsfeld's deputies and the Bush Administration, the core foundation to maneuver warfare (and the key to the victory) was provided by the deceased Colonel John Boyd. His concepts of OODA (observe-orient-decide-act) forced the U.S. Military to change their thinking on command and control of armed forces and their interaction on the battlefield and beyond. This book, "The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War", is an outstanding biography of this amazing warrior. From his blue-collar upbringing in Erie, Pennsylvania to his battles in the Pentagon, the Ghetto Colonel help form the AirLand battle strategy of the 1980s (with the advent of the F-15/F-16), and Maneuver Warfare for the 1990s and 2000s (influencing USMC thinkers).

On the downside, Mr. Coram's book does seem to toot the horn of Col Boyd a bit too much. If one has not read other books on 4th generation warfare, it would seem that Col Boyd did it all on his own... Nonetheless, this book is an awesome read for scholars of war. Colonel Boyd's name belongs up with the Captains of Strategy (Sun Tzu, Clauswitz, Jomini, Thayer, Fuller).

WOW! HE'S THE MAN!

I Loved this book! John Boyd....and man who was in total control through out his life..became a man with no control at all at the very end...I actually cried reading about his finals days :(...a great read!

Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War

An excellent read. As a former Naval aviator and now an employe for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics where the F-16 is built, I can attest to Boyd's drive to build the best lightwight fighter in the world. He was certainly correct in his methodolgy to build somethng that the rest of the world did not have. Sales prove that. But the information in the behind the scenes tactics that Boyd employed are exceptional reading. Highly recommended - everyone that I have suggested that they read this book has agreed

briliant thinker

Boyd was a genius fighter pilot. He reinvented air-to-air combat tactics in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's. Even today, his ideas on combat seem advanced.
