Genius work

This is perhaps the greatest fantasy comic ever made: easily enjoyed by children, savored by discerning adults. The pacing is perfect. The readers get to know the characters so exquisitely and intimately that you barely notice the epic themes of the plot creep in, and by the time that you do, the investment is so deep and the stakes are so high that it becomes a thrill ride all the way to its amazing conclusion. Highly, highly recommended, especially for children too young to appreciate Tolkein and the like.

I liked the amount of pages and like graphic novels. I thought the pictures were excellent in this story and I also think it was a great plot. I heard about it in a magazine and hoped it would be good, it was not good; it was fantastic. This book I would recommend to any person. Child or adult.

A wonderful example of rare art- The comic book epic

Comics seem like a natural medium for fantasy. There is no limit to what can be drawn and the stories aren't constrained by budget. But the medium has produced few of what can be called epics. Dave Sim's CEREBUS and Jack Katz's THE FIRST KINGDOM come to mind (I'm sure someone else will mention some I didn't remember), but the dedication and will to complete a true epic fantasy in this medium has left only a few examples. BONE is the newest and perhaps the best example of what comics can accomplish in this genre. The tale of three outcasts from Boneville, Phoney(The greedy one), Smiley(the comic relief), and Fone Bone(the heroic figure), find themselves in a new land, inhabited by rat creatures, a tough old farmer and her beautiful niece. Add in dragons, irate townspeople, talking insects and a mysterious quest and you have 1300 pages of a funny, adventurous, and thoughtful tale that will stand the test of time. The story's not perfect, Ted, the talking bug, ends up being a bit of a deus ex machina , and sometimes the contemporary humor of the Bones seems intrusive in this fantasy world, but the overall effect is one of wonder and a stunning accomplishment.

BONE- an awesome collection

I bought this as an end of the school year gift for my 10 year old son, who is aspiring to be a cartoonist/comic book creator/writer. He absolutely loved it. The artwork is creative and the story line is really funny/scary!!! To quote my son, "IT is AWESOME!!!!"

Wonderful Escapism

A thoroughly enjoyable comic fantasy tale with nicely developed characters and appealing artwork. Probably not the most original plot I've come across but there is enough novel in it to maintain interest (and the detailed characterisations help). It's also not too big on the subtext but then again that sort of thing can sometimes get int he way of a good story (which this is).
