Should Be Called: "Baby Bargains... and Life Saving Tips"
Wow, I am so impressed with this book! I almost didn't pick it up, figuring I was thrifty enough to save a few bucks on my own, but I'm so glad that I did.
I've spent a lot of time researching the items on my
baby
registry, using not only Amazon's reviews/rankings but several other sources to select the best products. Not only does this book have reviews of every major product I have on my list, but a whole plethora of practical tips to save money and protect your child.
For example, I hope to use cloth diapers with my first child (due February '09) and I thought I'd need a diaper pail. I had NO IDEA that several of the popular pails out there are intended for disposables only! So instead of some fancy plastic contraption that is unlikely to do anything at all to reduce the scent of soiled diapers, I've used the book to help me devise a plan that will work better for our family (the plan involves chutes, sacks, etc... I won't go into it).
I have zero friends with babies and only one relative with a child (a seven-year-old), so I won't be getting most of my parenting tips from people I know. This book is like the wise mother of six teenagers, who's been through it all and can help you along the way.
The copy of the book I bought was published in 2008, so the reviews and tips all are remarkably up to date. I was surprised and pleased by how timely the information was. One of the popular reviews on Amazon regarding the book is from 2000 and it doesn't reflect the updated information included in the 2008
edition
. The 2008 edition has lots of info on cloth diapers and repeatedly mentions that breastfeeding will save you money. So be sure to read the DATE of the review when considering whether or not it's relevant to the current edition of this book!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, especially for first time parents (like myself) who try and do their research but simply aren't aware of some of the nuances of baby care.

just what a new mom needs
This book was reccomended to me and once I read through it, I realized how desperately I was looking for something like it! It's so helpful, organized, and no-nonsense. It tells you basically what's trendy- but total wastes of money, and where the best places are to buy bedding,
gear
, etc. I loved this book and have passed the word along to many expectant moms.
Fantastic book
I am expecting my first and had no clue what I was really supposed to buy. This book tells it all. I crossed a lot of things off my list based on their advice about "wastes of money" and learned a lot about safety of bedding and travel
gear
. I'm so glad I read it before I bought anything! The reviews of specific brands and models are super helpful. It is also very readable, even funny at times. Highly recommended.

love the "sample registry," wish they reviewed changing tables
Buying stuff for kids is completely overwhelming - way too
much
to know and compare! I used the sample registry in the back as a jumping-off point for building my own, it was a huge time saver.
I only wish they had reviewed some changing tables, or at least told me what to expect in a high-quality model vs. low-end. All they say is "use the top of a dresser, tables are a waste of money" but that doesn't help us. We got a changing table as a gift, and can't find any solid info about whether it's a good brand or not, even on their website/forum.

some great reviews and saving tips, but also try Craigslist!
Baby
things get very expensive, I'm a first time mom, so I bought this book to help and guide me through the jungle of buying and registering for baby items, This was a true lifesaver! They got into
more
detail than Consumer Reports and really tell it like it is. I'm a big advocate of reusing or recycled items, so baby consignment shops were a big area to look into if you want to save a bunch of money. Also [...] is really where the
bargains
are! I passed this book on to my friends to help them too.
