TOS II -The Series gets a Budget!
The
Star
Trek
Collection is a worthy hobby and certainly the largest of the television
series
DVD Collections (The
Original
Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise). At around 1400 minutes per box, you are looking at approx 30 boxes with 700 hours of viewing. That is 1 month of non-stop Star Trek. No DVD series comes remotely close to that. Get going collecting right now and build up on each succession over the years. By the end you will have a very serious anthology that defines the word awe. This is the kind of item that requires 1 hour a day of your time for the next few years. It is a cherished memory that served your fathers and will serve your children also. Our very planet, Earth, has advanced because of Gene Roddenberry's admirable concept. Roddenberry nailed the premise of the series when he said that he wanted to create a show with characters that we could look up too. `The Bridge' members are like our family. Watch what they do. Then go and spend your life striving for the same on Earth. What engineer, medic, scientist, teacher, worker can not say that Star Trek has not influenced them? The show is this significant in the development of our species. Even Christians respect and quote its authority and it is not hard to see why. The DVD case is beautiful. Make sure to retain the cardboard holder that it sits into as this helps stability on the shelf (although the box can still stand alone the bottom is a little narrow). The shell cracks open down the centre to reveal a box. Sliding out of the box is a small booklet insert with discs in a well designed plastic holder that flip from disc to disc. There are 4 episodes per disc, and 8 discs in total. However the last disc, disc 8, only has two episodes, for a grand total of 30 episodes. The rest of disc 8 is devoted to Star Trek interviews and trailers with the usual expected extras...and then some more. Several of the shows come with a commentary. All the episodes have been remastered to the point that scratches and artefacts are hardly visible. The special effects have been touched up slightly (no strings), however they still retain an overall early look and feel, especially the initial episodes that have budget restrictions. The episodes are ordered not in the sequence they where filmed, but in the sequence that they aired, however each episode has been numbered according to the order they where filmed in. This means on one disc you have shows 4, 2, 12 and 1, in that order. The sound has also been remastered to 5:1 Dolby Digital! Since the show was shot in full frame, these dimensions are retained.
Star Trek, The Original Series (TOS),
Season
Two, starts to get a budget based on the ratings of TOS Season One. The Enterprise has undergone a new design and looks more than just a hunk of plastic hanging from a string... although not by much. The Bridge looks bigger with more components and consoles. Chekov, who was not in Season One, makes his first appearance here. Season Two has more space shots and attempts are made to film the Enterprise making manoeuvres. Costumes are brushed up a bit, but Kirk's new green sweater might attract some debate. The intro credits have an irritating *ding* sound every few
second
s. Both the Green sweater and the *ding* are done away with in Season Three. Apart from a few questionable episodes the series does takeoff in the right direction. There is an instalment with the character Dr. Zefram Cochrane who appears in the movie First Contact. There are themes of rapid aging, furry pets, alien abduction, telepathy, Nazis, advanced computers and time travel. Scotty appears more often than usual. We are introduced into our first space station that looks like pre-deep space nine. The alien costumes are given a sprucing up. In one episode there is a gathering of about twelve various life forms. The big plus side is in the quality of the dialogue between the characters. Spock and Bones go at one another more often. There is tension on deck as well as post-mayhem humour and analysis. At the end of each episode Kirk usually makes a statement to round up the day's affairs. They even crack a joke or two. It is worth it for the episodes "Trouble with Tribbles" and "Patterns of Force", along with being an important instalment for any collector's series. The main thing you will like about Season Two is the improved interaction between the characters. The camera also pans and dollies more, with lots of handheld making the visuals less static than in Season One. The credits and end credits also undergo a revamp, including titles that appear as the episode starts and ends and not just along with the music. There is lots of experimentation and improvement here that has since stood the test of time. The budget boost was certainly worth it.

"All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by"
This was the best
season
of TOS. It added a lot of characterization to the crew, particurlarly Spock.
Star
date 3372.7 "Amok Time" Introduces
TRek
fans to the Vulcan mating ritual, and one of the best Vulcan episodes of the whole franchise. 4 stars
Stardate 3468.1 "Who Mourns for Adonis?" Theory of Greek gods being aliens from other planets. Kinda dull. 2 stars
Stardate 3451.9 "The Changeling" Evil robot tries to exterminate all imperfect beings. Very interesting theory, and very cool conclusion. 3 stars.
Stardate Unknown "Mirror, Mirror" EXCELLENT EPISODE! Crew runs into parallel universe where everything is opposite. Started a long run of episodes on DS9. 5 stars
Stardate 3715.3 "The Apple" Crew finds society controlled by computer. Slightly better than the last season's attempt at this theme. 3 stars
Stardate 4202.9 "The Doomsday Machine" Indestructible machine destroys lots of planets for fuel. Good tension between Kirk, Spock, McCoy and visiting Commodore Decker. 4 stars
Stardate 3018.2 "Catspaw" Possibly the Halloween episode? In any case, very stupid. The three witches have laughing hysterically every time. 1 star
Stardate 4513.3 "I,Mudd" The return of Harry Mudd from Season 1. A better episode than his last. 3 stars
Stardate Unknown "Metamorphosis" Crew meets Zefram Cochran, inventor of warp flight, on a deserted planet. Fairly good episodes, but the Zefram Cochran is nothing like the Cochran seen in TNG's First Contact. 2 stars
Stardate 3842.3 "Journey to Babel" The first introduction to Spock's parents; Amabassador Sarek and his human wife, Amanda. Excellent. 4 stars
Stardate 3497.2 "Friday's Child" Another episode with the Klingons and a tribal war. Could have been better. 2 stars
Stardate 3478.2 "The Deadly Years" Crew ages quickly. Interesting idea, and another one of Kirk's former love interests. 4 stars
Stardate 3619.2 "Obsession" Kirk is obsessed with a deadlu cloud that killed his former commander. Could have been a lot better. 2 stars
Stardate 3614.9 "Wolf in the Fold" Scotty is the main suspect in a string of murders. OK until the end, which I thought was stupid. 2 stars
Stardate 4523.3 "The Trouble With Tribbles" The most famous episode to come out of TOS, it spawned a counterpart in DS9, and tribbles have now become a cult item (I have a fluffy stuffed one that purrs when touched on my bookshelf). 5 stars
Stardate 3211.7 "The Gamesters of Triskelion" Kirk and crew are captured by aliens who force them to fight. Interesting idea, just didn't work. 2 stars
Stardate 4598.0 "A Piece of the Action" Planet run by imitation of Chicago Mob. Very funny to see Spock trying to be a gangster, and "fizzbinn" will go down in ST history. 4 stars
Stardate 4307.1 "The Immunity Syndrome" Giant amoeba threatens galaxy. Laughable idea, but good feeling. 3 stars
Stardate 4211.4 "A Private Little War" A thinly veiled version of the Vietnam War, except with Starfleet and the Klingon. 3 stars
Stardate 4768.3 "Return to Tomorrow" Aliens take over Kirk adn Spock's bodies. All right. 3 stars
Stardate 2534.0 "Patterns of Force" Planet runs by Nazis. Interesting theory, but Bread and Circuses was better. 3 stars
Stardate 4657.5 "By Any Other Name" Andromedan aliens take over the Enterprise. Very good episode dealing with extra-galactic aliens. 4 stars
Stardate Unknown "The Omege Glory" Planet that is counterpart to Earth's Cold War. Would have been better if they didn't throw the American flag in at the end. Aren't all countries supposed to be gone by now? 2 stars
Stardate 4729.4 "The Ultimate Computer" CAptains look like they're about to be replaced. Great look at a captain's place. 4 stars
Stardate 4040.7 "Bread and Circuses" Planet run by Rome. Great gladiator fight. 4 stars
Stardate Unknown "Assignment: Earth" Enterprise interferes with mission to save 20th century Earth. Weird episode, was supposed to start a spin-off
series
that never happened. 4 stars
Good season...wish it was reasonably priced so i could buy it. >.

Best Season Of The Original Star Trek
The
second
season
of the
original
series
of "
Star
Trek
" is widely acclaimed as its best. And it's no surprise with such superlative episodes as "Amok Time", "The Changeling", "Mirror, Mirror", "Journey to Babel", "The Trouble With Tribbles". This season introduced us to young Ensigh Pavel Chekhov (Walter Koenig) and to Spock's parents, Amanda Grayson (Jane Wyman) and Sarek (Mark Lenard); this was the first of several splendid episodes and films featuring the distinguished Vulcan ambassador over the course of two decades in the 1980s and 1990s. Once again Star Trek was blessed in having such distinguished writers of science fiction and fantasy as Theodore Sturgeon and Robert Bloch - the latter for "Wolf in the Fold", an intriguing update of the Jack the Ripper saga now set on a distant alien world - write memorable scripts for the series.
The second season did a fine job exploring Spock's personality and his Vulcan culture in depth. "Amok Time", written by Sturgeon, is a fascinating character-driven drama focusing on the Vulcan mating ritual; here was the first time that we saw the Vulcan greeting "Live Long and Prosper", and a more than tantilizing glimpse as to how savage Vulcan civilization once was. "Journey to Babel", another splendid episode, introduces us to Spock's parents, leading to a gradual reapproachment between Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and his father Sarek (Mark Lenard). "The Changeling", among Star Trek's finest "First Contact" episodes, offers a plot that is not too far removed from the tale told in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". "Mirror, Mirror" remains among the finest set in the alternative savage universe of the Terran Empire, with some great acting from Shatner, Takei, and especially Nimoy, as a restrained barbarian Spock. "The Trouble With Tribbles", the funniest episode in the history of "Star Trek", was the first bought from an unknown writer, the young David Gerrold, featuring excellent comic acting from James Doohan ("Scotty"), William Shatner ("Captain James T. Kirk") and William Campbell ("Captain Koloth"); this may be the silliest episode I've seen dealing with Federation-Klingon Empire relations.
