muser must have

This soundtrack to Muse's dvd Hullabaloo, is a must have. The double disc features b-sides on one disc and a live performance from Le Zenith in Paris on the other.

First disc one. This disc contains a helping of b-sides that are worthy enough to see the light of day. They all sound very different from song to song, but seeing as it's a compilation, it really doesn't matter. I personally like all the songs, but I like Muse, so it's a given really.

Secondly disc two. For being a compilation of two shows into one disc, there is very seamless transitions from one song to the next. As far as a live cd, the quality it excellent. It's professionally recorded, so it isn't bothered by lots of background noises and overbearing crowds. It's not quite as good as seeing them live, but it does capture the overall sound very nicely.

Overall, I would recommend this album to anyone who wants to delve deeper into Muse and their music.

wonderful album but it's no Absolution

great album but why do you think it's a b-sides... it's all the songs that didn't really fit into the other albums.. so the cd doesn't flow together as well as the other 2or3 muse albums.. yet, the live version is brilliant and there are some really good songs on the b sides cd. definately worth buying especially if ur a muse fan.

The Best Muse CD by far

I have two other cds by Muse, this is the one that I always find in my CD player. The B-sides are amazing and the concert is the next best thing to seeing them live (I have). If you don't own this CD and you love Muse just as much as me then you need to get it. NOW.

One of the very best !

Listen to Hullabaloo a few times and there is just no way you won't love it...

In two minds about two discs

As the title of the review says, I'm a bit divided about this album. Muse's third release 'Hullabaloo' is not an ordinary studio album but rather a 2 disc edition comprised of a collection of B-sides from Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry and a live album. As is with most of such releases, this is fans-only. So don't consider buying this until you own the rest of Muse's work.

Muse's earliest B-sides aren't unfortunately nearly as good as their album tracks. This is usually the case, but as Showbiz is their weakest album the songs tend to follow the same pattern. I'll admit that I haven't listened to it that often...but Nature_1 and Shine Acoustic went right past me, unfortunately. Map of Your Head is an acoustic song accompanied by a lute. It sounds very mediaeval and is therefore very interesting. The first three songs are quite typical of early Muse and not very memorable. The rest consists mostly of electronic noodling, such as on The Gallery, and there's a slower version of Hyper Music called Hypochondriac Music. But the stand-out B-side for me is Ashamed. It is a cut above the rest and reminds me of good old-fashioned rock 'n roll.

The live album is a different matter alltogether. Muse as known for their explosive and spectacular shows. I have been unlucky enough to not be able to witness one yet. However, the album more than compensates. There are versions of the B-Sides Dead Star and In Your World, which are miles removed(and miles better!) from those on Hullaballoo. An advice would also be to get one's hands on the studio versions of these 2 songs, as there is a piano cut from the live version of In Your World which sounds like it was inspired by Bach. As this concert was recorded in 2001 naturally all the live tracks are also from Origin of Symmetry and Showbiz. Track 2, a sumptuous performance of Microcuts, is definitely one I would've liked to have seen live, in all it's baroque decadence. My favorites of all of these are the renditions of Screenager and Space Dementia. Unlike on Origin Matt here introduces Screenager with a piano improvisation which is lifted from Prelude in C#m by Rachmaninov, no less. And no, I have the original piece, I did not make it up. Just listen. Space Dementia, which in my opinion is the best track on Origin, is also performed here wonderfully. The closer of this live album is Agitated, which is a non-album track.

Well there you go. 3 stars for the B-sides, 5 stars for the live album. So 4 stars in total. The B-Sides are interesting curiosas, of course. But I would mainly recommend this album if you've got all the other albums by Muse, and you would like to experience some of the energy that Muse put into their performances.
