MORE THAN JUST A COMEDY, IT'S A STATEMENT ABOUT LIFE!
This movie is so near and dear to my heart. It seems to capture the different elements of my life all wraped up in one.
As the movie starts, we see the main character DANTE roll out of bed to answer the phone. The owner of the QUICK STOP can't make it in to open, so he has called the ever reliable DANTE to open. We learn that DANTE is not very assertive, somewhat uptight, and high strung, but also an all around good guy. Once he opens the store, We are introduce to his girl, VERONICA. Through their conversation, we learn she cares alot about DANTE and wants him to do something with his life. After a lengthy conversation about a certain sex act, we are introduced to the movies comic relief, JAY AND SILENT BOB(BOB played by KEVIN SMITH). They are just a bunch of wild party animals who are just out to smoke some dope and have some fun. After an amusing scene with JAY, we are introduced to RANDALL, DANTE'S smartass co-worker who doesn't seem to care about anything or take anything seriously. Throughout the movie, uptight DANTE is trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life(and figure out if he wants a relationship with VERONICA or his old flame KATELYNN). RANDALL serves as the anchor, keeping it 'real' when DANTE'S diatribes about life get a little out of hand. All this while dealing with CRAZY and BIZARRE situations, and taking in a days worth of customers.
This movie came out shortly after I turned 18 and was just starting to get used to the 'real' world. The reason I identify with this movie is when I was a teenager, I was just like JAY, ALL ABOUT THE PARTY!! Once I turned 18, I became, like DANTE, the very serious(only when it came to work) straight laced type. After a few years of working in the public service industry, I became somewhat burned out, like RANDALL, and developed an irreverant, smartass attitude to all the people I had to deal with.
This movie is about becoming an adult and not knowing what you want to do with your life, witch is something I, and I suspect many other people, know ALOT about.
The reason I gave it four stars is because although I LOVE this movie, It is very rough around the edges. You can tell by the camera work that KEVIN SMITH only had a few cameras to work with. The acting is a little stiff in a couple of places. In addition, this movie is notorious for taking a joke well past its point(the asian design major, for example).
To sum it up: If your a fan of real-life comedy drama that has something to say, YOU WILL LOVE

Such a great value.
If you love, like, or kinda dig kevin smith films, or just his style of film making, this edition of
clerks
is a great buy. They cover almost every aspect of the films making, even listing expenses at one point. talking about cast disagreements, and all with the kevin smith tongue in cheek style. I am glad I bought it.
