A Book Worth Reading
This book is very moving. It is a life story of a
man
fully devoted to a very noble
mission
. This book is true and inspiring. Some of my dear friends have read it and found it wanting, but I think they have read too many untrue novels. I am grateful to Greg Mortenson and to all of his family and friends in Afghanistan and Pakistan and here in America for the good that they do and have d

. The world is a better place because of all of them. READ THIS BOOK. Then pass it on.
An amazing story
This is truly an amazing story of
one
person's passion for making a difference. Having visited
man
y of these areas I cannot imagine that he was able to accomplish what he did. Then throw in all of the military activity during that
time
frame and it becomes an incredible tale of guts and perserverance. We bought six copies to give to friends.

Inspiring Story
This book sat on our shelves for the last 5 months. It's only when I finished my graduate studies did I have
time
to sit down and read it. And in
three
days I read it (a record me). The story is truly an inspiration about how
one
person can inspire others to make change. The historical perspective on mountaineering, Pakistan, Taliban, and others made this book a well rounded story for anyone.
Over-hyped...
I'm a little surprised by the nearly universal praise for this book. I selected it for a recent book club based on the fact that it was the best reviewed of the titles I was looking at. It's not a bad book by any means -- it starts out strong, with some wonderfully evocative scenes of hiking parties on K2, and shifts to an equally fanciful depiction of Mortenson's single minded (and selfless) pursuit of funding to build

of the world's most dangerous places. I thoroughly enjoyed the first third. At a certain point, however, the writing became repetitive and I grew tired of the sycophantic tone of co-author David Oliver Relin. This is essentially a puff piece that could probably be condensed by half.
If you're inclined to read this because every review is glowing, you may find yourself disappointed. I know I did.
