Beats all other general cookbooks

I was a bit leary of buying another cookbook. I already had "Better Homes and Gardens" and "Betty Crooker" and wasn't too impressed with either book. However I saw someone write a review that said "America's Test Kitchen" was better than the "Better Homes and Garden". They were definitely correct. They have excellent tasting recipes that appeal to our more modern tastes unlike the old fasion cook books that unsuccesfully try to imitate grandmas cooking. I 100% recommend this cookbook and wish I had found it as a single guy earlier. It has top notch recipes that make me hungry even as I write this. This is the only book I've taken the time to recommend and thats only because I love the food and want everybody else to enjoy it as much as me. I sound like an promo person. Sorry.

Most used cookbook that I own!

To say that this is my favorite cookbook is saying a lot. I have well over one hundred of them. I will buy any cookbook from the folks at Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen because I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that their recipe for whatever is the very best one. This cookbook has a recipe for everything, with careful instructions and good pictures. They explain why you do everything and why they know that. From simple things such as how to roast a chicken to more complicated recipes and even ethnic foods, this cookbook really covers everything. This is perfect for a young adult, a newlywed, anyone just learning to cook, but it is also ideal for an experienced cook. It is just a great cookbook and I have given it as a gift to several people.

The only caveat is that the pages are ultra thin and tear easily. This is likely because it has so many, many pages and thicker paper would render it too unwieldy to use. Buy packet of hole reenforcements and get cooking.

A great book to round out your recipe books

This book is one of the better Cooking Illustrated cookbooks that I own. I like this one better because in this Family Cookbook there are more recipes that I am more likely to use everyday. I also like the binder, instead of a hardback edition that they normally produce. This binder can take some rough handling, which is good because because I believe I will be using this book a great deal in the future.

This book is set up very similar to the "Better Homes and Garden's Cookbook" and the "Betty Crocker" cookbook we are all so familiar with. What makes this book more desireable is their explanations behind cooking each dish, and the fact they give you information about why you do something. This book serves to educate you about your cooking, and helps improve your skills.

I have enjoyed the recipes that I have tried. Now, is their recipe "always" the best? I think that is a little subjective. What I think they offer that others do not, is consistent high quality recipes. I have made several of their recipes, and none has ever failed.

This book also offers, what I think is a slightly larger range of recipes than its counterparts. More drink, appetizer, meats, salads, and so much more than other cookbooks. What I like is that their recipes are generally slightly more sophisticated than every day recipes. While the recipes are more sophisticated, that doesn't mean they are more difficult to make.

This would be a great starter cookbook for a new cook. The photos, explanations behind the recipes, and additional tid bits they offer with each recipe is very helpful. Even if you are a more experienced cook, I think this cookbook will give lots of great new recipes, and ideas that everyone you cook for will be pleased with the results you receive from this book.

I want it in hardback- PLEASE

I LOVE THIS BOOK. That is, I love the recipes, the detail, the illustrations. But i hate the thin paper, sure to rip right out of the ring binder in a flash. I HATE ring-bound and plastic bound cookbooks. If they had put this in a decent hardback version, it would get 6 stars! AT LEAST! And might have been the best family cookbook in our solar system!

America's Test Kitchen receives and A-

This recipe book is great it is like a better Betty Crocker because the recipes are generally common household recipes that people make but their instructions and measurement of ingredients are spot on right! I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book to a seasoned cooker but for me the beginner it is great. The only complaint as others have pointed out is that the quality of the book, meaning construction, is poor and they could have laminated the pages or something but as long as you buy it from Amazon (plug plug) it is cheap enough that it doesn't matter that much (the book costs over $35 at Target). Hope this helps those purchasing.
