This book is incredible!

My twelve year old son was being a terror and I was feeling so desperate prior to reading this book. This book helped me so much that I just have to share the wonderful results I've had. Many self-help books are heavy on jargon and light on tools and strategies but not this one. Dr. Bernstein really understands how defiant kids are hurting underneath their disruptive behaviors. He shows parents and teachers what to do to turn things around. Not only will you lower the defiance and power struggles, but you will also build your relationship with your child. I bought the book a few months ago. Now I am buying a second copy for a friend. What a true gift to be able to share!

Solid, practical advice

Defiant children know how to push parents to the limits. This book provides very straight forward advice that parents can use to de-escalate situations so things don't go from bad to worse--something that defiant kids are really good at doing. Dr Bernstein did a great job of breaking it down into simple terms how parents can do things differently and why. Well done!

Finally, some great help!

I found Dr. Bernstein's book to be very easy to follow and not at all overwhelming like some "self-help" books can be. The 10 steps were an effective method that brought, not only lower defiance, but helped heal the relationship between our son and ourselves. This book doesn't promise you a quick fix--it takes lots of hard work to change patterns and behaviors but the outcome is truly worth it. These ODD kids don't come with a parenting manual, but I feel this book comes pretty darn close!

I loved this book!

Dr. Bernstein's innovative approach for reducing defiance in children really works. He stresses in 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child that understanding defiant kids is key. Dr. Bernstein really hits the mark on this, based on what I have seen work with difficult kids. I've read lots of parenting books but this book truly stands out because of its emphasis on being calm, firm, and noncontrolling. These three vital components of Dr. Bernstein's approach are very powerful because they guide parents to bypass the emotional reactivity of defiant children and teens. If you really apply the techniques in this wonderful book, you will also be very pleased with the results. I have not only found Dr. Bernstein's approach helpful for parenting, but also in all my dealings with difficult people.
