This book + common sense = a great sigh of relief
I am a pediatric nurse and a brand new mommy. With my clinical back ground, I could advise many parents on how to care for their newborns; however, when I became a mom I was thrown in the reality that you re
all
y truly can't parent " by the book"...I spent a lot of my
baby
's first months struggling with the " do's" and "don't's" I'd pushed on parents as a nurse because it's " what is recommended". I felt like a complete idiot because I couldn't respond to my baby and get the results I thought I should yield. I needed some gentle guidelines. I headed to the library and started grabbing parenting books. This was the last one I picked up and the first one I read. I simply cannot tell you the relief I felt as I read this book. While I do not agree with every last detail of the book, It was just what I needed to calm my fears .
Now you must know that NO author, nanny, pediatrician or nurse can give generic guidelines that will work for every baby! So if you go about buying parenting books expecting them to fix
your
every problem, you will be disappointed with ANY book. However, if you can read the book and allow it to give you a little background information, encouragement and lay down some basic guidelines all while using your common sense, I think you'll get a lot
from
this book. Obviously, if you read the book and think " this will never work for my child", put the book down and keep searching! All babies are different.
I was having a hard time keeping my baby on a routine and at 3 months I knew she needed some sort of consistency. After reading the book, I changed my expectations and went at the plans detailed in with an open mind. In the first day my daughter went from being fussy, hard to put down for a nap and very difficult to feed, to a happy, playful little girl. I didn't realize that my baby was
beyond
tired and over stimulated. This book teaches that a baby's eating, playing and
sleeping
are all interrelated and if one area is struggling, all will be effected.
I am sorry that others have been disappointed by the book. I am very thankful to Tracy Hogg for sharing her expertise.

My Bible when I needed help!
I loved this book! It was great to have a common sense source of ideas and information when
your
brains have f
all
en out following child birth.
I had already bought, enjoyed and employed many of the 'teachings' in Tracy Hogg's first book and this book covers the same stuff but then goes into more detail, provides more in-depth information, more case studies, and ideas for what to do if it all feels like it's going wrong (even though it probably isn't and all you need is a bit of reassurance!!)
I liked how it continues on
from
the previous book and covers more about sleep/
feeding
/behaviour issues with older babies too. Very helpful since my daughter seems to be growing up so fast!
I liked the relaxed friendly tone it is written in and how her approach is less stern than other similar childcare advisors. Her child friendly approach combined with structure and routine suits my style of parenting (and perhaps my style has been influenced by the books??)
This was definitely a valuable source of information that supported me as a first time Mom at a very challenging time...steep learning curve doesn't really cover it!
As a result my child is a great eater and sleeper and is generally well behaved(!) and some of the credit has to go to Tracy Hogg and her book's influence.
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to parent with love and kindness, providing routine, structure and hopefully discipline!!!
I also bought this for a friend as a
baby
shower gift, and it was a great hit!

Wow! Really helpful!
I purchased this after hearing about it
from
friends. This is my first child and this book was extremely helpful! Tracy is re
all
y smart about what babies need; lots of common sense. As with any advice book... remember to try it all, use what you like, chuck what you don't. My son is now a happy, polite, and rested toddler.

My sister was given the original "Secrets of the
Baby
Whisperer
" book to read as part of her nursing curriculum in college. I read a couple years ago at her recommendation and thought it was a great guide.
If you've read the other one, then you'll love this book. It is more of a troubleshooting book than the first one. It has sample routines and charts to use.
I'm in my 5th month and feel confident that anything I face in the first few months can be managed better with the guidance
from
this book.
If you haven't read the other book first, you can still use this one. She explains everything again, you may just have to be patient while she does.
