Excellent Option for Up-Conversion Player
I must say that after reading all of the reviews about this product frmo various sites I felt that this would be a great option for an upconverting
dvd
player
. I have a fairly large library of dvds and did not want to have to start anew especially with the blueray-HD war in full effect. I plugged it in last night with an
HDMI
cable and at first I was concerned because the resolution was not that good. I messed with a few of the settings and tried another DVD. Let me just say.....WOW! The picture was close to high def quality. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the rating for a blueray picture, I would say that this player comes in at about an 8 with a standard dvd player picture quality around 5. Motion is improved, color, clarity, and sound. I'm using a Samsung 46" LCD with 120hz frame rate and
1080p
resolution so the tv helps out a lot, but there is definitely a difference between this player and your regular SD player. I literally spent two hours popping in dvds for my favorite sceens. Warning, depending on the dvd manufacturer date, some will look much better than others. Lord of the Rings is more than stunning. If your looking to upgrade picture quality without spending the unnecessary dough, go with this player and you wont be sorry. Just made sure that you are using HDMI and an optical cable for sound if you dont have an HDMI ready Tuner.

Great DVD Player
I never knew that buying a good
DVD
player
could make you want to watch movies.
I would watch movies on my PS2, hooked up through a
Sony
VCR them via coaxial to my TV which did not have video inputs, Along came this DVD player and using the same hook up I could not believe my eyes, the picture was incredible,All I need now is one of the new Sony Bravia HDTVs And I'm good:)
A superior player
Having now had the
Sony
NVP-
NS77H
/B for 2 months which we purchased from Amazon, I can say in complete confidence that is is worth every penny. We have a 105 inch front projection home theatre using a 16:9 HD projector. On a projection screen this large, every flaw, no matter if the cause of the
DVD
itself or the
player
(or both), is magnified and all too easy to see. We are dazzled on picture quality when viewing a good DVD on our system using the Sony player. Details such as hair, skin, fabric, textures in general, are sharp, clear and vivid. The
upscaling
and progressive modes are not gimicks and they work superbly on this player. Additionally, this Sony player offers a lot of customization for picture control (color, contrast, sharpness, etc.) as well as other features you can turn on or off or change. We were prepared to spend more, but, honestly, since DVD players have been out for so long now, the technology is well advanced to now offer high performance at a very reasonable cost ratio. We are in fact going to buy another one of these for a bedroom tv as well. This player deserves 5 stars!.

Very Good
Excellent picture & sound via
HDMI
cable. No, the cable's not included; it wasn't on a different
Sony
I bought last year, either. This is no problem as far as I'm concerned. Bought HDMI cables from Amazon for around $12 each.
Easy hook-up, good (but not excellent)remote.
Good buying experience through Amazon. Competitive price.
It's Okay
I recently bought a new Samsung 42 inch plasma from Amazon (love it btw). I'm not ready to invest in a Blu-Ray
player
just yet so I thought I'd get an
upscaling
DVD
player to enjoy a better DVD experience. Based on the reviews here, I got the
Sony
. It came the other day. I hooked it up using
HDMI
and went through the set up, which was very easy. I wasn't expecting Blu-Ray performance, I had my expectations set, but I have to say, I can't really tell the difference between this and my older conventional DVD player. The picture is acceptable and the sound is great, so I'm giving it 3 stars. But if you're looking for a much better DVD experience on your HDTV, you may want to wait for Blu-Ray prices to drop. When they do, I'll be going that direction.
