A Hope Classic - Poor DVD Presentation
This movie is a Bob Hope Classic. What goes through the mind of
the person responsible for its presentation on DVD?
Several scenes are out of focus and colors are unsteady and fade
in and out. It is obvious that the print utilized was a well used
copy and had not been previewed. The sound is also not reproduced
well and volume must be set very high to get the most out of the mono soundtrack. If this is the best that can be done it was a
waste of time and effort. The Theatrical Trailer looked and sounded much better. Very disappointing that no background or insights are
provided with this movie either.

Solid Fun!!!
Yes, there are a few moments in the film where the picture quality suffers. But this movie is over 60 years old, for crying out loud! Heaven only knows what kind of shape the original master prints have to be in to even look this good.
Hope is The Great Sylvester, a mediocre entertainer bound for the nearest continent that has never heard of him (or his miserable act). Along the way he crosses paths with
pirate
s, criminals, the lovely Virginia Mayo as a young
princess
trying to escape her domineering father's wishes, and ensuing general comic mayhem.
This film is light-hearted fun all the way through, the occasional image transfer problems notwithstanding.
Watch Hope in this film and I almost guarantee you will be reminded of Kelsey Grammer's "Frasier Crane" character -- not because of any similarity between the characters but rather because Grammer's style of broad comedy borrows heavily from Bob Hope (and Jack Benny, too).
This is a fun movie and absolutely worth seeing.
