Superb music!
I rented this movie on DVD having little knowlege about the subject matter other than it was an award winning documentary. Essentially, for me, it was an introduction to a new type of music. Many years ago in junior high school in a small town in the Rockies my Spanish teacher was a newly arrived Cuban immigrant. He was an excellent teacher and that memory made me curious about this movie. This gathering of semi-retired musicians still has so much soul and if you don't get goose bumps at least once you are probably tone deaf. Unfortunately, I have seen only the Japanese edition here in Japan which has no English subtitles for my Spanish which has grown rusty. Although I can read Japanese subtitles I would prefer English ones for the lyrics.

Great DVD, Music, Artist and Story
Cuban Music. !!!
Nothing better. Buy this DVD because it is a great beautiful story.
Because it brings to the front the great talent and warmth of the Cuban people.
But to clarify one issue, these Musicians or Music were never forgotten.
This music was made illegal after the Revolution, they were thus made usless to the Revolution. Nothing to do with the " Embargo". It was the Castro regime that made this music illegal to be heard or recorded because it was deemed un Revolutionary. Anything prior to the Revolution was BAD!. So Politics do matter.
From that moment on, musicians and singers could only sing songs that extolled the values of the "Revolution". That is one of the biggest reason that so many Jazz group developed in the Island, that was the way musicians found they could play this music and not be forced to interject the required lyrics required by the goverment. It was not until the government found that they could make money of their backs that they let them sing and play again.
Watch the end of this DVD when Ibrahim Ferrer sings his closing song at Carnagie Hall, look deep into his eyes and you will see the soul of a man that realizes what his God given gifts could have given him had he had the oportunity that was taken away from him by one man.
Cuban Music still thrives. It will always be, because it's in all our hearts. It's part of who we are. It is our National joy and pride.

The story behind the music...
Ok it wasn't exactly what I expected, which teaches me to read the reviews :D, but its still worth the watch to get a feel of those times and how the music came together. I bought it as a gift, and though more music would have been appreciated...it was a good blend of documentary and the music.
si
Great dvd if you're intrested in learning the stories of the musicians behind the record.
highly recomend it for all die hard music lovers.
Worth it for the Cubans
I love this music, but there are two things that bug me about this movie.
1) The performances are always cut off by narration or a different scene. I suppose that's why this is a documentary, not a concert film, and it may not be a fair complaint. It just kills me every time they cut a song short. I keep thinking, 'Can anything they are going to say be half as awesome as this music?'
2) Ry Cooder, GET THE F*CK OFF THE STAGE. If you want to make a record of all this beautiful music, bless you, and thank you. But the arrogance, YOU playing on the record and worst of all at the effing concert... despicable. If you had HALF the respect for these musicians as you claim to, you'd let them perform without your annoying guitar licks instead of making it "Cuban music FEATURING RY COODER!" His guitar playing appears on the CD's, too, I understand, which is why I refuse to buy them.
So, if you can't sit through a whole song, or if you love Ry Cooder so much you need his stain on the music, you'll love this.
