BRUTALLY REAL
THIS FORGOTTEN CLASSIC DELIVERS A NUMBER OF GUT PUNCHES.....MOST NOTABLY DANNY AIELLO PITCHING THE GUY OFF THE ROOF,RACHEL TICOTINS OVERDOSE AND THE PROSTITUTES MURDER AND DISPOSAL OF IN A ORIENTAL RUG[WE NEVER SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BODY UNTIL THE END, BUT PAY ATTENTION, IT DOES TURN UP,AFTER ALL]. PAUL NEWMAN IS AT HIS BEST HERE,BUT SADLY THIS MOVIE IS SELDOMLY SEEN TODAY.THE BLASTED OUT NEIGHBORHOOD DEPICTED IS DESOLATE, AND THE POLICE STATION DOES APPEAR TO BE AN OASIS AGAINST SOME OF THE SENSELESS MADNESS WE SEE IN THIS GREAT,UNFORGETTABLE MOVIE......

Gritty and realistic police drama
This "lost" cop drama from the early 80's hardly ever shows up on television and seems to be relegated to the one-copy-per-store shelf of the local video store. Such an un
fort
unate fate has befallen a really good film.
Paul Newman, Edward Asner, Ken Wahl and a "young" Danny Aiello are excellent. Only is Pam Grier "wasted" as a drug-dependant prostitute. For one that is an early 70's icon (for films like "Foxy Brown" and "Coffy"), Grier deserves more than a "walk on" as a addicted prostiture. Fortunately, her resume has a variety of roles that display her talents, as well as her physical attributes, in larger and more impressive roles.

Newman is good as always but this film still lacks story.
Paul Newman, one of Hollywood's living legends Does his best in this role but his presence is not enough to save this poor film. This is a film basically about the life of cops living in the
bronx
area and face day to day bad situations, such as corruption, greed, and random violence. But what this film doesn't make clear to the viewer is whether or not it's bashing the police or making a statement about urban reality. And by two thirds of the way in this film you really don't care how it turns out. One highlight of the film is when Paul Newman And Danny Ailleo were duking it out in the street. This film won't go down as one of Newman's best.
