Argerich Gets with Her Debut What Most Fail to Get Life Thru

I would not protest if anybody called Martha Argerich the greatest pianist of the 20th century -- even if it is too courageous to label anyone with such an unequivocal attribute. But this debut recording of hers (1961), generously on one CD (and for a good price) with astonishing Liszt's Sonata (recorded in 1971) would justify such a claim...

Argerich's interpretation of Chopin is flawless, as always. Besides the Sonata, also Hungarian Rhapsody by Liszt is well-nigh perfect. Brahms' Rhapsodies she infuses with sustained power and tangible emotion, while she resists the temptation to play Ravel's "Jeux d'eau" too fast, rather letting the relaxed piano fountains run their spectacular game. Toccata No.11 by Prokofiev is a welcome enrichment, with wildly fast octave sequence toward the end of the piece.

This album is a treasure.

Riches to enjoy for a long time.

This CD is simply a wonder. But for me, one of the main wonders on this disc is Argerich's disarmingly romantic and mysterious Brahms Rhapsodies- works which are so often unjustly thought of as student pieces. The G minor in particular is one of the most moving bits of pianism I have ever heard. Argerich is at one with the music... In some works I find her less mature and commanding than in later recordings (her Jeux d'eau is not amongst my favourite recordings of this piece- I much prefer Lortie and Gieseking here) but on the whole this is simply breathtaking pianism... and when you remember that she was only 19 when most of it was recorded, it boggles the mind (I am 19 and there is no way in the world I could ever imagine playing the piano like Argerich does on this disc!). Particularly when you consider that the Prokofiev Toccata is still considered one of the yardsticks by which others are measured.
The Liszt sonata is gripping from beginning to end, and her Chopin quite easily shows why she is considered a master interpreter of his works.
Argerich is a chameleon, a fascinating chameleon who seems to be able to mould herself into music of any period and style and give almost definitive performances of all of it. If only there were more like her!

She is one of the greatest pianists - period

I came to Argerich late. But a friend of mine told me to get this disk years ago and I did. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How could I not heard of a pianist this brilliant? Well, everything I have heard from her since has confirmed over and over again for me what a treasure and genius she is.

Yes, her technique is brilliant and flawless and her interpretations are uniquely hers, but that is a virtue to me. Is she convincing? Yes! She takes such chances and is able to hold a line while letting it almost run out. She never plays it safe.

You can pick your favorites on this disk, but they are all worth hearing. The b-minor sonata of Liszt is for the ages. The specifics of each performance are really not the point. You should hear this disk and it belongs in your collection. It will challenge what you think you know about how these pieces should be played.

A must-have for any piano lover

I completely disagree with anyone who says that Argerich is all flash with no depth. That could not be any more incorrect. Every piece on this CD is like a gem. The Chopin Scherzo is full of bravura and excitement and beautiful phrasing. The J'eux d'eau is the best one I've found out there and same goes for every other piece. The sound quality is also superb. This is a CD you will keep listening to because you simply don't get tired of it and it is filled with emotion. I highly reccomend this CD.

Outstanding

This is an amazing CD - a must have for lovers of classical pianists. I find myself replaying it over and over again, drawn to it because it so far surpasses any other listening experience in my collection.
