One Razor to Rule Them All!
I received this
razor
as a birthday gift from my brother a couple of weeks ago. I thought, "Hmmm...Handsome looking vintage piece, but there's no way in hell I'm gonna put that meat cleaver to my face!" Well guilt got the best of me, I figured the razor looked expensive so I'll give it a go and hope that if I die from blood loss the police will figure out that my death was from shaving with a new razor and it's not from suicide. I'll tell you after a few times shaving with this razor I am now going to retire My Gillette Fuzion. It's takes a bit longer to shave with this razor than with a conventional multi-blade but the results are undeniably better. My wife can't wait to kiss my cheek with school girl glee right after I shave! I have a beard that is as tough as sandpaper and I've never had a closer shave than with this
Merkur
. I don't have the same spots to go over and over again and therefore my face is less irritated. I use a brush, a glycerin based shave cream and always shave in the shower and that makes a significant difference as well. Factor in that blades for this razor costs so much less then Mach 3 & Fuzion's (I buy cryogenically tempered blades that last 2x longer than store bought) and the way to opt out from expensive razor marketing ploys becomes clear. Don't sit on the fence on this one ditch whatever Mach, to the nth power, razor you're using and pick this Merkur ASAP.

Just used it for the first time..
All I have to say is wow. I'm 24. My first
razor
was the same kind of DE razor that my dad used (some Gillette). Around 17 the mach 3 came out and since the full knowledge of shaving was never really handed down to me, I opted for the mach 3 which was easy to use and gave a decent shave. I've essentially stuck with the Mach 3 until now, but being generally unsatisfied with the closeness of my shave I decided to investigate and turned back to the
safety
razor picking up this
Merkur
HD. I just used it for the first time and it turned out to be significantly more satisfying than I had hoped it would be. I nicked myself a few times without really noticing so there's some learning curve but as of now I've only used it once and I can tell you that it won't take long to get it down.
A couple thoughts:
1) I'm really glad that I went for an HD. I thought the HD may be
heavy
(and it may be compared to other DE razors) but I wouldn't want it to be any lighter. It already feels light in my hand.
2) The biggest thing to keep in mind about the shave is that the razor cuts by keeping it perpendicular to your skin. The most notable difference between shaving with the Mach 3 v. the Merkur HD centered around this. With the Mach 3 I kind of feel like I have to drag the blade across my skin (kind of scraping it) to get a close shave (which can be done and I don't notice that much irritation). That said most of the shave with the HD was as close, but since the aim is to keep the blade perpendicular, the razor felt more like it was gliding over the skin. Very nice.
3) To put in a new blade you unscrew the bottom and the top part comes off. You pop in the blade, put the top back on and screw the bottom to tighten the top.
It should be noted that I've started shaving at night so that I can tell what I'm doing (I'm not a morning person) so in the morning if I'm not really going to pay attention the Mach 3 may still be better. Also, I'm using cheap soap and a boar brush from CVS until the stuff I ordered comes in so with any luck it will be even nicer next time.

Excellent Razor
My very first DE
razor
after many recommendations, and I must say that I am yet another one of those enthusiastic supporters of the
Merkur
HD DE
Safety
Razor. I may eventually decide to upgrade, but if I ever do, it will only be after much practice with this razor and simply for the sake of having the adjustment feature, which may or may not be necessary for some individuals depending on the toughness and thickness of your beard. When used in conjunction with a badger hair shaving brush, some excellent shaving cream (Proraso was my first, and the only thing mildly unpleasant is the scent, and even that grows on you after a while...check your local Target near the women's spa section) and the highest quality DE razor blade, changed every so often, of course, this razor provides an excellent, close, irritation-free shave. After using this marvel, I vow never to return to the cheaply made, ridiculously expensive (when the cost of replacement cartridges is considered over the course of a man's shaving lifetime) multi-blade systems of Gillette or Schick. Just be a little more careful of your technique, and getting an outstanding shave from this razor should be a cinch. Highly recommended!

Nice Razor for a Beginner
I recently took the plunge back to DE
razor
s with this one. I have since picked up some old Gillette's on eBay. I've been thinking I might as well have stopped with this razor. It produces a nice close shave and I don't seem to create as many nicks and cuts when using it.
A life-long investment
Revised 4/14/08:
This
razor
rocks... the proper technique for facial hair is easy to learn: short, light strokes, down, then up (if you want a closer shave). This gives me hardly any nicks compared to the Gillette Mach 3 and is way easier to unclog than the Shick Quattro.
The sample blade lasted about 4 months of 2 face shaves per week. Typical razor cartridges wouldn't even come close to that longevity, and they cost about 4 times as much as the replacement
Merkur
blades, which are 50 cents each.
I progressed to head shaving with the purchase of Israeli "Super + Platinum" blades which work out to be 15 cents per blade (about 13 times less expensive than razor cartridges!). I vary my head-shaving direction every once in a while to reduce nicks; sometimes down, then up, sometimes across, then up, sometimes just up. I advise you shave with a badger hair brush and some good soap or cream, which will give you the freedom to practice these varied techniques.
I expect I'll be using Merkur as long as I can't afford permanent hair removal.
