Dysfunctional Buddy Flick - not for everyone

The first time I watched this film I got a cramp from laughing. This movie is sick and wonderful, disgusting and beautiful, heartwrenching and ridiculous, peanutty and chocolaty. This is a movie to watch with a group of friends, lines from this film will be entered into the group dynamic..."My cat can eat a whole watermelon!" This movie is not for everyone though. If your sense of humor is fragile, if you are a fan of Andy Warhol, a member of PETA, or are in time share sales: you may be offended. Some folk will not get it, while some folk, like me, will spend time writing glowing reviews about it. I can only hope they rerelease this piece of cinematic genius on DVD soon.

"This is what happens when you leave the house"

Words do not do this film justice. It has to be seen to be understood. Either you will watch it and laugh a lot or you will watch it and wonder who's idea it was to allow this film to be made. I am sorry for those that do not like it, because I truly believe they are missing out on something heavenly. It's an odd one, I won't mislead you. But, there are very few films like it and that speaks volumes for its worth. Give it a chance . . . After all, isn't watching Crispin Glover for a few hours all the entertainment any of us really need?

My cat can eat a whole watermellon!

Ruben & Ed is a diamond in the rough. I rented this movie one day because I could find nothing that I wanted to see, so I took a chance. My friend and I took it home and have been hooked ever since. It is right at the top of my 10 best movies. It is refreshing, and surreal. Howard Hessman (Ed) reminds me of the majority of realtors I have ever met. There are so many subtle jabs of humor that it is mind boggling... the knock on the door of the prospective client at the exact second, and the quick last second urgent fart immediately prior to the door opening... a big smile for the client.... it explains Ed's entire downward slide in life. And Ruben, not one to have his orderly life altered is thrown into a tailspin by the untimely demise of his cat, and Ed, and the desperate journey to return life to the way things were.
A great movie to experience.

Not a Movie rather 'The Movie'

This film is pure joy. Unlike any movie ever made before it. I have personally watched this film over 50 times. Every time I either see something I never saw before or something I forgot. I wish they would lower the price on this film or put it on DVD. This is a low budget, independent film done perfectly. The acting is incredible as well as the cinematography. Buy/Rent and enjoy. Or send a message to the producters to lower the price.

"My cat can eat a whole watermelon."

Here's great little nugget of weirdness. Crispin Glover plays Ruben Farr, a reclusive slacker of sorts who lives in the motel owned by his mother. He spends a lot of his time listening to Mahler, dressing in 70's clothes, and not much else. His mother threatens to take away his beloved music unless he makes a friend, and so enters Ed Tuttle (Howard Hessmen). Ed has his own problems. See, he a part of an organization that makes money through some sort of pyramid scheme, and Ed has been less than successful in recruiting new members. Ed also suffers quite a bit of verbal abuse from his ex-wife, Rula, played perfectly by Karen Black.

Ed happens to meet up with Rubin, and they make a deal that if Ed will drive Rubin out to the desert and help him find the right spot to bury Rubin's dead cat, Rubin will attend one of organizations' meetings. Things go awry, as they tend to do, and things start to really get weird.

A low-key comedy that a number of people I know thought was stupid, but if you enjoy bizarre characters and offbeat situations, then you'll really like this movie. Hessman is really funny playing off Glover's usual oddness. This movie may not be for everyone, but after watching, I did find myself quoting a number of lines from the movie like "I am the king of the echo people!", "Man, it is el warmo out here.", or "Why don't you keep your hands off other people's refrigerators!" Not available on DVD yet, but I'll keep looking...
