Stumbled upon this prey...

I read numerous books and, up until now, haven't read any of the prey series. I was suspect at first, since I'm in academics, I thought this series might be poorly written--as are some popular novels that seem to fly off the book shelves. Having been skeptical at first, I was floored by Sandford's writing and ability to place you right beside Lucas Davenport, and watch the fast-paced plot unravel. Lucas is a self-destructive character that seems to come out smelling like a rose by the end of the book. As of now there are 14 Prey novels, and I have purchased all of them--after reading Eyes of Prey, of course.

Eyes of Prey is acutally the third book in the series and catches up with Davenport as he is chasing a killer that has a nasty habit of taking the eyes from his victims. The pace of the book is fast, and the plot is peppered with so many twists and turns that you will be unable to stop reading--I read the book in two days. Davenport is the type of character that keeps you wanting more as you finger each page, anticipating the next exciting plot-twist.

I would recommend that you pick up all of the prey books, but start at the beginning--I unfortunatley did not. 14 in all and here are the books in order:

RULES OF PREY
SHADOW PREY
EYES OF PREY
SILENT PREY
WINTER PREY
NIGHT PREY
MIND PREY
SUDDEN PREY
SECRET PREY
CERTAIN PREY
EASY PREY
CHOSEN PREY
MORTAL PREY
NAKED PREY--just released this year!!!

Hold onto your hat

I just started the Prey series a couple of weeks ago and I must say these books are great!! Eyes of prey is so creepy. Since reading the book I have become more aware of my surrounding when walking out to the car in the parking lot. Who knows there might be a Carlos Druze out there waiting and watching. It just gives me the creeps. Michael Bekker is just a flat out crazy, drugged up, psycho. The end has a litle twist to it that I like....I kept wondering if we would ever find out who "Loverboy" was and you do....on the last page. This is one of those books that once you start you have to just keep going. It's so hard to put down. If you haven't read any other of the prey series books then start from the beginning and go from there because the books build on each other.

good stuff

I have read all 13 or 14 (however many there are) books in this series and this still stands as the very best. An amazing read. It is too bad he peaked so early, but the rest are all still good, just not as good as this one. The only detective - mystery books better are the Dan Simmons books about ex-con detective Joe Kurtz. Some are better than others, but they are all good. Highly reccommended.

ghoulish crime story that happens to be *very* good...

Quite honestly I was somewhat disappointed with my first John Sandford novel ('Rules of Prey'), mostly because too much time was spent on the lead character (a police investigator), his famous love life, etc. But I saw 'Eyes of Prey' in a secondhand book shop, bought it, read it, and ... wow! Mr Sandford did a much better job with this third installment of the 'prey' series.

In 'Eyes of Prey' we still have our stud puppy Minneapolis police investigator trying to solve the murder/mutiliation of an adulterous woman. Her husband, a medical professional and substance abuser, is not a suspect but ... he *seems* to be involved. However when these horrendous events repeat themselves we are pulled into the sick world of the husband and another very curious character. Thankfully Sandford spends little time on the private life of the hero and concentrates on delivering a slick (and frighteningly believable) crime story. Lots of plot twists, scary moments, etc. And the ending (literally the last page) is terrific.

Bottom line: not for the squeamish. But this is one nightmare told with panache.

A Good Read

Eyes of Prey is a highly suspenseful novel about a doctor who wh plays a cat and mouse game with Minneapolis, P.D., namely Davenport, and takes part in several gruesome murders with a hideous partner in crime. Sandford delivers a good effort with this one but it's not quite as suspenseful as his debut, Rules of Prey. Overall, it's still a better than average suspense novel and very gripping and tense dialogue.
