One of the most captivating stories ever
The
Shadow
of the
Wind
was a book I randomly picked up ages ago. I have no idea what drew me to it, but I recently discovered it on my shelf, took it down and figured I'd actually read it. By the time I turned to page two, I knew I was in for a treat. I can only read in English, so I have no idea if the original Spanish is as elegant as the translation, but I was immediately wrapped in language so wonderful that even if the story had turned out to be mundane, I knew the experience of reading the book would be a delight. In the end, the story captured my imagination to such an extent I could hardly put the novel down to take care of the daily things one needs to take care of. I found myself wandering off into day dreams thinking about the characters I'd left on my table at home. I pondered where the story could go. I marveled at each unexpected plot turn. Finally I finished the book, closed it and, unbelievably, I wept. Something about the story, the language and the experience of reading this book so took hold of me that I was emotionally drained upon closing it for the final time. Pick up this book. It is a rare treat.

A must read
This is a great book! It has a incredibly interesting story that will totally keep you guessing what happens next. It is also very well written which is sometimes hard to find in a book, but I think this one has the whole package going on. Read it!
Finally, a literary, mystery romance story!
Having purchased this book on the advice of a friend who raved about it, I did not expect it to live up to her rather effusive praise. After a few chapters, I was hooked by the language, the story, and the questions raised by the author. I literally was riveted to the novel the last 100 pages and constantly surprised by the unconventional twists and turns that the story took that I had not expected. The characters, with a few exceptions, are fully drawn and believable, even if somewhat surreal in some cases. I hesitate to give too much away as you must read the book to appreciate its appeal. I worried about the novel's being a translation, but once I started reading it, never gave that aspect another thought. For a highly unusual and literary read, give this book a try!
