Simply Astounding!

The Oxford Atlas of the World (14th ed.) is an atlas with detailed country maps, beautiful two-page satellite images of each continent, along with maps of the major world cities. But this is what one might expect in an atlas. The Oxford Atlas offers much, much more in the way of detailed color graphs of the world showing, in vivid color, many things one might not associate with a simple world atlas. The following are some of the maps and figures presented, but it should be noted that this is just a sampling. And because Oxford paid royalties to Phillips for these maps, you can be certain that they are of the highest standards as that is the bailiwick of Philips.

Some of the "other" things in the Oxford Atlas of the World:

Distribution of Volcanoes- see all major tectonic plates throughout the world along with a graph of the active volcanoes since 1700. Also included is the process of precisely how plate tectonics works.

Continental Glaciation- See how glaciers covered the earth 200,000 years ago and compare that to an image of what it looked like 18,000 years ago along with one of the present day.

Ocean Currents- A world maps showing ocean currents in January & July along with various temperatures in the different oceans.

Updated environmental hotspots showing where, worldwide, up to 75% of the world's most threatened species live.

Also included are maps showing:

-Temperature
-Precipitation, rainfall and snow
-Staple crops
-Population density
-Population change
-Land Use
-Growth by continent
-Urbanization of the earth (maps showing the years 1850, 1900, 1925, 1950, 1975, and 2005)

And that is just a sampling of what you will find....perhaps it would be easier to list what is NOT in here! This is a treasure of useful information which would be time consuming to find elsewhere.

Although officially this is an atlas, it is indeed so much more.

Oxford World Atlas, 14th edition

I've owned and frequently referred to several world atlases over the years. This one tops them all for its completeness, readability, accuracy, quality of paper and binding, and ease of use. It's also very affordable. If you search for a used copy, be sure you know which edition is being offered as it is surprising how out of date a not very old atlas can be. This atlas contains a remarkable amount of detail, but it is a world atlas, so don't expect the kind of map detail one finds in say, a large road atlas. An outstanding buy!

What a beautiful atlas! The digital mapping and large scale maps make it an essential part of our library.

I am quite satisfied with this purchase of a second-hand copy of the World Atlas. It is in very good shape and gives me exactly the information I was seeking.
Due to the heaviness of the book and the large size, the back binding was coming lose as I received it in the mail. I doubt that that is a fault of the previous owner of the book, but of the quality of the binding for such a large, awkward size book.
