good test prep

I bought this book, along with Verbal Workout for the GRE, to help me prepare for the exam. It does a very good job of explaining the testing process, so you'll know what to expect.

The verbal section was really helpful. The strategies can take a long time at first, but once you get used to them you get faster. The hit list was great- I just wish the Verbal Workout book offered some more words.

The math section was good, but mostly as an ego boost. They explain that the GRE math is actually easier than SAT math, to account for the more verbal-based majors who haven't seen math since high school. (But then you have to wonder why the verbal is so hard, when there are plenty of math-based majors who haven't studied english since hs.) It is still helpful to review; you never know how much you forget in a couple of years! My biggest beef with the book was with this section- my main problem was with pacing, but you can't get a timed practice section unless you take a practice exam. Also, I found it really hard to learn their strategies when I could solve the example problems so much faster and simpler on my own.

The writing section is also helpful. I ended up not practicing this part much, since you have to pay to get it graded, and I only did ok. (I took the exam twice- I did well the first time, but not as well as I knew I could. Totally killed math and verbal the second time, but I'm still waiting on my written score.)

The dvd is for those who learn better from watching tv than reading a book. It has about 4 total practice problems. I thought it was a bit of a waste of time, but I can't comment on how other people learn best.

Would I recommend this book? It's a toss-up between the better verbal practice you get from Verbal Workout and the online tools (practice tests) you get access to with this one.

Gets the job done

Ordering a GRE book, I didn't expect any miracles, just some heads up on what to expect on test day. The book is well written and organized, and has a subtle theme throughout of making fun of the whole GRE system, which is amusing in and of itself. Note that it does come with some vocab words, but you will probably want to pick up a study book that exclusively focuses on improving your vocab, because the strategy in this book doesn't help much if you don't know the words.

Catchy DVD and helpful book

I watched the DVD and reviewed this book just 3 days prior to taking the GRE. Both were quite helpful. Would purchase Princeton Review test review guide again.

this one wasn't half bad. It explains how the test works and gives you a good overview of the sections. Quantative, Verbal, Writing... It was pretty helpful for me to be familiar with the format before I took the test.
