A thoroughly delightful read!

I never pay much too much attention to bestsellers. If anything, all the hype surrounding them just turns me off to the book. This book was a notable exception. I think it was the unusual title that first captured my attention. Reading the book description intrigued me even more. I just love a well-researched historical fiction book, and am riveted by anything that sheds light on World War II.

I was not disappointed. "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" was charming in its simplicity. With a few deft strokes, the authors were able to make the story of the German occupation of the Channel Islands come alive. I was initially leery of the technique of using letters alone to propel the narrative forward, but by the last satisfying page, I was left with the feeling that I had just spent a refreshing several months on Guernsey Island with Juliet, the clever protagonist of the story, immersed in a world populated by quirky, warm, and very real characters, booklovers all. A thoroughly delightful read!

Heartwarming Novel

This book was loaned to me as a "must read" and I was reluctant to do so because I already had an entire bookshelf waiting to be read. I am so glad that I took the trouble to start the book because I was hooked within a couple of pages. This is a series of letters between people of totally different educational backgrounds and the letters reflect that perfectly. It was an entertaining and sometimes touching experience to follow the stories of these fictional characters.

A Book to Read Twice

This is one of the more captivating books we have read, and we would like to share it with you.
It is funny and wise, exposing the essence of what it means to be human. At the same time, it's of interest historically. We had never given much thought about the Channel Islands, but the book has made us feel very much a part of life as it was lived in occupied Guernsey during World War II.
If only we could write such elegant and delightful letters as you will find in this book we might set the telephone and e-mail aside and share our thoughts through words written in one's own hand.
We have come to know Juliet and Dawsey and the others, and we think you too will enjoy their company.

Delightful!

This book was SO spectacular and charming that though I savored every word, I couldn't stop reading! I am sad it's over, and sadder still that the [main] author is no more to write another book. Half a day after finishing this book, I am waiting to start to forget the details a bit, so I can read it all over again.

A treasure on my bookshelf

I read the last page and immediately began a search for other books from Mary Ann Shaffer - there are none! I'll be watching and hoping.
