The Master at the Top of his Form
Sandford is an excellent writer, and
Invisible
Prey
is his best yet. From first page to last, the book throbs with life (and death) and action. He never lets up, he never misses a beat, and he never plays a false note. If I were to be finicky, I might say that the firebombing was not adequately explained, but that's a quibble. If you haven't read this book, do, but only if you're free tomorrow, because you aren't going to put it down.
If you have read the book, join me in waiting to see if Sandford can top this one!
Excellent Prey Novel
It has been quite some time since I last read a
Prey
novel. Needing something a little different, and from an author which I am familiar, I picked up a copy of
Invisible
Prey by John Sandford from the library.
The book opens with the murders of a rich, old widower and her maid, by "Big" and "Little." A couple of days go by before the bodies are discovered. When
Lucas
Davenport
arrives, he is confronted with a ransacked house, filled with antiques, but doesn't understand why some little, seemingly insignificant items are missing while more expensive items were untouched. Lucas has been called into the case because of the wealth of the murdered widower. But he has something else that is taking some of his attention: he is running the investigation of a politician for allegedly having sex with a minor. And it is an election year. Along the way, the two cases become intertwined, Davenport immerses himself in the world of antiques, and someone, attached to one of the cases, goes missing.
As it has been a while since I last picked up a Prey novel, it is hard for me to compare this one to Sandford's earlier efforts. But this novel works for me. Immediately drawn into the opening murders, and until the last page, Sandford had me. Davenport is a very likeable character, tough when needed, soft when dealing with his family and others that he cares about. He is not above a little breaking and entering when needs to do some snooping. Watching him work out the details of both cases, trying to work them separately and then together, was done very well. There are several good twists and turns, which kept me turning the pages. Especially late in the novel. At that point, it was impossible for me to put the book down until I had finished it.
And it has a great scene concerning a very protective dog with an interesting name.

Good but
I love John Sanford's books and this one was no exception, but John Foxjohn and Cold Tears is a lot better.
