Closing in for the kill
A Helicopter approaches the US war ship and deposits a writer Ben Munceford (Sidney Poitier) and a naval doctor Lt. Cmdr. Chester Potter, MD (Martin Balsam).
It is the peak of the cold war and the last thing this ship or captain Eric Finlander (Richard Widmark) needs is a writer or a doctor. In fact both will prove to be a burden as the ship's high strung and efficient crew is out to find a soviet sub, any soviet sub where it does not belong.
The captain has a history of forcing soviet subs to the surface in embarrassing locations. The captain's companion is Cmmdre. Wolfgang Schrepke, German Navy (Eric Portman), an expert on submarine tactics.
They finally find what they are looking for. However something about Capt. Finlander's attitude concerns Ben. And the continuous state of readiness concerns Lt. Cmdr. Potter. And the slow tension buildup concerns us.

Shocking cold-war classic
This is intense edge-of-your seat drama. A frightening portrayal of the obcessive cold-war captain mistaking equates fear of his authority with readiness in war. The end is inevitable and chilling. Mr. Portier's character comes off a bit on the preachy and self-righteous side but still gripping and likeable. Richard Widmark is, perhaps, at his best in this film and gives a stunning performance as the obcessive and bullying captain. A great addition to any intense thriller drama library.
A real Cold War Chiller!
Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier are reunited from their movie "No Way Out" and in a bit of a stretch their roles reversed. Widmark plays a staunch and disciplined, bordering on fanatic, captain of the naval destroyer U.S.S
Bedford
involved in a cat and mouse chase of a Soviet submarine. Poitier plays an over enthusiastic reporter bend on getting the true story of the most deadly game being played out.
This is a great Cold War movie boasting an impeccable cast of supporting actors and a perfect companion to "Fail-Safe". As with Fail Safe and The Longest Day, appropriately filmed in B&W.

excellent suspense
I first watched this film many years ago....It was one of the most suspenseful movies I had ever seen at that time. Widmark and Poitier are both excellent in their respective roles...In fact, the whole cast is excellent.
I especially enjoyed James McArthur of Hawaii Five-O fame and Wally Cox.
This is a film that will keep you on the edge for its length.
