A comedy masterpiece.... and an excellent DVD release

Clerks is directed by Kevin Smith. The film stars Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Lisa Spoonhauer, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Scott Mosier, and Walt Flanagan.

Clerks follows a day in the life of two sales clerks. Dante Hicks works at a convenience store, and has been forced to work on his day off. His life is miserable - he hates his job, his girlfriend frequently tries to push him into going back to school, and to make things worse, he has just discovered that his ex is engaged. Randal Graves, Dante's slacker buddy, works across the way at a video store. Despite his low-income job, he always kicks back and enjoys life - just the opposite of Dante, who he frequently visits, even while on the clock. As the day progresses, numerous obnoxious customers visit and strange events ensue - including a rooftop roller hockey game and a funeral visit gone horribly wrong. It's just another workday for the twosome - but with its share of weird twists, events, and visitors.

The greatest things about Clerks are the characters and the plotline. If you have ever worked in retail, there will be plenty of scenes that will remind you of customers you have dealt with on the job. The experience is made all the more complete with its entertaining protagonists, the troubled and pessimistic Dante, and the rude slacker Randal. You'll laugh yourself silly in any scene in which Randal deals with a customer - I know I did. Other members of the cast are equally entertaining despite their considerably shorter screen times, including Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith himself as Jay and Silent Bob, the drug dealers loitering outside the store, as well as Marilyn Ghigliotti and Lisa Spoonhauer as Dante's love interests, past and present. The characters and plot are where this film's true strength lies.

Music is one another strength of the film. Smith elected instead to use a mix of alternative rock tunes of the day, including pieces by Alice In Chains, Stabbing Westward, Corrosion Of Conformity, Bad Religion, and Soul Asylum. They reflect the nature and feel of the film perfectly.

Clerks has gotten two official DVD releases in the United States. The original release on DVD from 1999 was, more or less, a DVD port of the Laserdisc issue, with the deleted scenes, trailer, and Soul Asylum music video. But the "X" tenth anniversary release is, by far, the superior DVD. This version is THREE discs of material, with the first disc featuring the theatrical cut of the movie and the relevant bonus material, including auditions, the Laserdisc commentary track, and a trivia track. Rather than including scenes deleted from the theatrical cut, this release has the ENTIRE original unreleased cut of the movie, appearing on the second disc along with a commentary track. The entire third disc is nothing but bonus material, including a ninety-minute documentary, a question and answer session with Smith, photos, journal entries, and even articles and reviews for the film! Clearly, if you're going to buy the film, the X edition is the way to go.

Thumbs up

Vilification....Malaise....Dante!

It's sort of hard to describe this movie. Put it this way. I didn't know what in the world I was looking at when I caught Clerks mid-way through in the fall of 1996. I was in Navy specialty school in Meridian, MS when somebody rents this movie in the enlisted club and I became a fan for life. All I remember is a guy in the movie singing into a fake mike, "Berzerker, my love for you is ticking clock Berzerker!" These people in the movie looked like people I went to school with. When I found out the movie takes place in New Jersey, I immediately felt right at home. I am from Jersey and I am telling you that this is like no movie I have ever seen before. It is unique unto itself with random discussions about Jedi, milk maids, fornication and other wacky characters making their appearances, you will not regret buying this flick that will live on in infamy.

In the 80's, 90's we had John Hughes for great comedy movies, now we have Kevin Smith for the best comedy movies.
