One Razor to Rule Them All!

I received this razor as a birthday gift from my brother a couple of weeks ago. I thought, "Hmmm...Handsome looking vintage piece, but there's no way in hell I'm gonna put that meat cleaver to my face!" Well guilt got the best of me, I figured the razor looked expensive so I'll give it a go and hope that if I die from blood loss the police will figure out that my death was from shaving with a new razor and it's not from suicide. I'll tell you after a few times shaving with this razor I am now going to retire My Gillette Fuzion. It's takes a bit longer to shave with this razor than with a conventional multi-blade but the results are undeniably better. My wife can't wait to kiss my cheek with school girl glee right after I shave! I have a beard that is as tough as sandpaper and I've never had a closer shave than with this Merkur. I don't have the same spots to go over and over again and therefore my face is less irritated. I use a brush, a glycerin based shave cream and always shave in the shower and that makes a significant difference as well. Factor in that blades for this razor costs so much less then Mach 3 & Fuzion's (I buy cryogenically tempered blades that last 2x longer than store bought) and the way to opt out from expensive razor marketing ploys becomes clear. Don't sit on the fence on this one ditch whatever Mach, to the nth power, razor you're using and pick this Merkur ASAP.

The Leica of Razors

I've been using mine for 20+ years. They last that long! When it comes to blades, private label products from your local CVS, Longs, or Walgreens can be surprisingly good. I've found Merkur and UK Wilkinsons disappointing by comparison. "Feather" brand blades from Japan are amazing, however. Unbelievably sharp, and you have to adjust your technique, but worth seeking out on the Internet.

Get a brush and find a shaving soap you like. It completes the experience and delivers superior results than anything canned or tubed.

Finally, some editorializing. Gillette has perpetrated a decades long confidence racket on the market. Every three years they bring out a new razor that is always more expensive, but delivers no real advantage. The revelation offered by Merkur is that going back to 1910 technology delivers better results at dramatically lower cost. There aren't too many ways left where you can rebel at bogus technological "advances*," but getting a Merkur and defiantly plunking down a five spot for 10 no name blades at the chain drugstore is a good place to start.

*Flat, squarish toothbrushes have completely disappeared from the market. It's all curvy stuff now that looks like the result of argument between Frank Gehry and Michael Graves. The lack of choice insults me. I really have it in for people who presume to make my decisions for me.

Awesome Shaving Alternative

I have been getting irritated skin / razor bumps / ingrown hairs (the whole nine yards) ever since I started shaving. I've tried different cartridges, different methods of shaving, and even a cutthroat razor (had to give that up right away -- much too much maintenance). However, with the purchase of this Merkur HD safety razor, I've finally found a product that I can stick with. People say it takes some getting used to, but I found it not the slightest bit more difficult than shaving with a cartridge razor. I get the closest shaves ever with it, with practically no irritation. Other pluses include blades that last nearly a week and only cost 50 cents a piece!! With cartridges costing up to three dollars, it's time to go old school (especially since I'm a poor college student).

I can't compare this model to other safety razors, but I can say that it is a great intro safety razor. Good weight, and simple to use. I would definitely recommend this razor to anyone fed up with the cost of cartridges, and looking for a simple, effective solution.

Best razor I have ever owned!!

Men, you are gonna love this razor..and many women also. It is well made with a nice weight and balance. The blades are cheap and it gives an amazing close shave. The unit itself will last forever...it is so well made. Why spend all the money and time with all those expensive "shave systems"...this is the real thing guys....outstanding product indeed...
