pi should have been called phi, which they refer to as theta in the movie.
well done for so cheap.
A first rate thriller from a promising director.
To mention Darren Aronofsky's name is somewhat similiar to mentioning his name in 1997. Nowadays, the general public may or may not know of his triumph Requiem for a Dream (Director's Cut) and his wonderful The Fountain (Widescreen Edition) but most should learn of him.
This is his first feature. A thriller that's all about math. Amazingly, it's still a great film. While not as powerful or memorable as his further films, this is still a wondeful film.
Sean Gullete gives a wonderful performance and Aronofsky works the camera masterfully in this first rate mathematical thriller.
The DVD features two coomentary tracks and a number of 'Lost Scenes' and a few feauturettes.
A good movie that I would recommend to anybody. Any fan of Aronofsky or Requeim for A Dream shoud defiintely see this. ****

Atypical movies are becoming typical
Offbeat moviemaking doesn't have the fascination it used to. Filming in black and white, creative editing, yer standard 'dark and disturbed' character is almost becoming rote. This movie has all that stuff, but you have to give props because of the low budget, and it was still effectively done. The prospect of a 216 digit number being the key to the universe is fascinating and for my money, they could have gone into greater back story about that, and less of the main character's slow meltdown trying to gain knowledge of it. A PBS style documentary would be great! Anyway, this moving was still entertaining, even though the style of it has been repeated enough now that it's not quite as interesting as it might've been.
One thing kept coming up as I watched this movie, which was it seemed to me that those guys who made the Matrix must have been influenced by this movie to a degree. Like they took the concept and went way out with it, but more than that, all of the shots in the subway were VERY reminiscent of Matrix scenes...the shot where the main character is in the white light reminded me of Neo meeting the Matrix creator, ...the whole numbers tie-in, Kabala, etc,etc.....
