the best tool in my tool box

BY FAR the most important tool in DIY car repair or modifications is the shop manual. I have used various Bently manuals before (for VW and BMW), and they are the best by far. I have shop manuals for Acura and Toyota, but I find the Bently's to be more informative and even fun to read (if you are interested in how the things work and diagnostics, not just how to replace them). For a precision machine like a BMW, don't even waste your time looking at PepBoys or AutoZone for a Chilton or other cheap shop manual.

This is a must have and the only manual to own if you work on your E36!

Comprehensive & some expertise required

This manual is by far the best manual for the e36. That being said it is by no way the definitive bible on these cars. While you won't find another manual that covers as many topics in so much detail, there are some omissions and admittedly so by the publisher - apparently some of the procedures left out (like work to the bottom end of the engine) are too expensive to cover, considering the small number of people who request them. All in all however, even a complete novice grease monkey (like myself) can perform most if not all of the tasks outlined. A veteran enthusiast therefore will find this manual even more helpful.

One gripe I do have is that some of the diagrams and photos could be a bit clearer but no one should be scared away by this little point. The tasks outlined are definitely achievable with the instructions provided. just read over everything before you begin - like the manual states!

A good to have...

But not that comprehensive. I find the electrical diagrams a little lacking and some of the procedures misleading. I'd suggest don't depend 100% on this book. Talk to techs and pple who have worked on E36s as well.
