A solid thriller in the series
Eyes
of
Prey
is the third in the Lucas Davenport series by John Sandford. In this edition, Lucas is still torn up by the ending of Shadow Prey which featured an attack in his home against himself, his lover and his child. He takes it out on a young thug by beating him senseless. Internal Affairs begins to investigate and Lucas is on a short leash as he begins to investigate the murder of Stephanie Becker.
As it is with many Prey books, we know who the killer is. Except in this case, there are two killers. Two evil men decided to try and idea they gleaned from a movie where they each take turns killing each other's problem person. Carlo Druze kills Becker's wife and Becker kills Druze's boss. There are problems however when their is a witness to Becker's wife's murder, an unknown lover.
Meanwhile, there are more killings. Becker is a pathologist at the university hospital and is constantly living in a drug induced stupor or euphoria. Druze is a scarred, damaged man easily pliable by Becker. The strength in Eyes of Prey lie in the tight police work and the characterization of the bad guys and of Lucas's decent into depression. The ending is also surprising, yet doesn't really give any clues into the forth book in the series (which retains some characters from this book).
As usual in the series, there is a lot of cussing and sleeping around. But Standford has crafted another great thriller that will keep me reading the entire series.

Delicious! You will eat this one up!
This book is fantastic. I had read most of the
Prey
series many years ago (now it is much, much bigger) and had forgotten how classic "
Eyes
of Prey" is when talking about Lucas Davenport AND thriller/pychological books. This book is fast-paced and no-holds bar.
The main suspect, Michael Bekker, is intelligent and cool. He is a huge "druggie" and relys on his massive drug collection to get him through various parts of his days. He uses these drugs to provide the attitude he is looking to achieve: stiffness at the funeral of his wife, looseness, straight thinking (if this is possible with a drugged up psychopath), etc.
On the other end of the spectrum is Lucas Davenport, the man that is growing to be, at least in "Prey" readers eyes, one of the most memorable hero's in recent fiction. He is still struggling with the trama induced in the last book, trying to save his disfunctional family (his reporter on-again, off-again girlfriend) and his little baby girl. Of course, Lucas Davenport being Lucas Davenport encounters many opportunities to stray from his family man role. And of course, there is a public relations nightmare as usual.
This book is so exciting as it races from no clues to some unsubstatial evidence. There are so many interesting factors that affect the characters and their decisions: drugs, responsibilities, urges, etc.
It seemed like the perfect crime...

If you love to be scared and creeped out this is for you!
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you don't like gore don't read. If you like reading about people who are definitely disturbed you will love this book!
This book has it all...
In this third installment in the
Prey
series, readers find Lucas Davenport depressed over his failing relationship and estrangement from his child. Lucas soon turns his focus on police work when he's called to investigate the gruesome death of Mrs. Bekker, wife of physician Michael Bekker. She was brutally killed, and her
eyes
were removed. Lucas is convinced that the doctor is somehow involved, but he's got an ironclad alibi. Is there more to the story than meets the eye? (pun intended!)
Read this book and you'll see why John Sandford is as popular as he is. This book amazed me, and I loved every page! The story is full of action, violence and psychological suspense. It's better than a roller coaster ride! The characters, both the good guys and bad, are extremely well written. The ending was surprising and managed to tie up all the loose ends. Keep the light on when you read this one.

Eyes of Prey
Not a book for the squemish or if getting into the head of a psycho isn't your bag of tea don't even open this book. On the other hand if your the blood-and-guts/what-a-nut type, this is the book for you. A real page turner. I had a lot of trouble putting this one down. Once again, Lucas Davenport has a lot to unravel. He plays a real cat and mouse game with his protaganist. Very interesting....
