Lifetraps -- No Longer a Lifelong Trap
Excellent book on how to apply a combination of psychodynamic, Gestalt, and Cognitive
Behavior
al techniques to oneself (through self-help) or others (in counseling). Based on the idea that there are "maladaptive schemas" starting in early years of development, ways are outlined for identifying, experiencing, and then challenging and replacing these "
life
traps" with improved and more satisfying functional coping skills. The authors originally developed these methods for personality-disordered (Axis II, DSM-IV TR) Clients but this is the "popular" (and I think the more useful and better-presented) version of their original book on the topic. The concepts apply to everyone across the board and are not limited to people who have a "diagnosis" or are in "therapy."

The Awakening
Reinventing
Your
Life
is a powerful opening to taking a closer look at ones self and the conditions that we place ourselves into without a second thought. This book exposed the many
negative
thoughts that enter the mind and that we embrace without questioning the information or intention of the information. I'm proud to say that I no longer struggle with negative thoughts and/or
behavior
s after reading this book. Of course, something works only if you are willing to conscientously put the steps into action.
Excellent self-help book
My wife, who is a psychotherapist, regards this book as an excellent insight into how a client's behaviour in the present has been shaped by early childhood experiences. It provides a conceptual framework, as well as self-assessment tools.

Right on the money
This is the best self-help book I've ever read, because I think it's extremely accurate in identifying
life
traps that pervade people's lives. So many self-help books are a lot of fluff and BS, but this one really has a lot of concrete truth in it.
One
negative
thing I would say about the book is that it attributes the cause of all the lifetraps to one's upbringing--their environment. However, I think genetic predisposition also plays a role. For instance, some people are born more shy and subservient than others, which would make them prone to the subjugation and dep

ence lifetraps. I think the authors should have pointed out that there may be genetic causes for the lifetraps and that drug therapy may be useful in treating some of the genetic causes.
Another fault of the book is that while it is extremely accurate in identifying what some of the lifetraps are and some of their causes and effects, I think it falls a little short on giving people ways to overcome them.
