baby wise

I am a pediatric nurse practitioner and mother of 2. The Baby Wise book was recommended to me by a mother of 4 when I was struggling with my fussy 3 month old, who also had trouble going to sleep at a decent hour.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

I started baby wise with my first child at age 3 months. Letting them "cry it out" is the most challenging yet most rewarding (for both child and parent) part. The first night I was very upset listening to my son cry off and on in his crib for 1.5 hours. The second night was 45 min. The 3rd night was 20 min. By the end of the week the crying lasted for less than five minutes and by the next week he stopped crying as soon as I left his room.

Again this part was very hard but I knew he was loved and well cared for, had been changed, was in comfortable clean clothes, in a comfortable bed, NEEDED TO SLEEP, and was not hungry. In addition, I would rock him and sing to him for a few minutes before I kissed him and put him to bed. If I responded to his crying by getting him out of bed, I knew he would just start crying all over again when I put him back in bed.

The interesting thing about baby wise is that I was able to get him to bed by 7pm by starting the "cry it out" but when I rocked him to sleep or layed down with him it took untill 10 or 11pm. Because of his earlier bedtime and structured nap schedule, he was no longer fussy. I always made a point to get home for nap times and not rely on the carseat or stroller for taking naps.

I started my daughter on babywise when she was only weeks old. It is sometimes hard to follow the book exactly at this young age but if you do your best you will be rewarded. My youngest is now 18 months she dropped her 3rd nap several months ago but is still taking a morning and afternoon nap. She sleeps from 7pm to 7am every night. I will merge her two naps into one early afternoon nap with in the next few months. Everyone comments on how happy and energetic she is. She will go all day with out crying unless she gets hurt. Many friends and family have never seen her cry. Also.......my children have never fallen asleep on the couch, rarely in the car or stroller, at the table, on the floor ect. because I never let them get that tired. They go to bed long before they become fussy or pass out.

KEEP IN MIND.....It only takes about 3 days to change a sleep habit
There has been a lot of press lately on US children not getting enough sleep. Experts recommend the following with regards to sleep. These should be minimum
NEWBORNS 16-18 hours a day
INFANTS 14-16 hours a day
PRESCHOOL 11-13 hrs a day
SCHOOL AGE10-12 hrs a day

My 5 year old sleeps 12 hours a day and my 18 month old sleeps 15-16 hours a day. And they are both HAPPY. They are both in or above the 50th percentile for height and weight and never had problems with failure to thrive.

Just think about the poor, cold, starving children in Africa when you are listening to them cry in their crib.....it realy puts everything into perspective. Our children are blessed.

Guidelines to help Baby Organize their Sleep.....and yours!!

This book = happy baby and happy parents!

My children are now in preschool and first grade but I remember all too well how many questions I had and how much sleep disruptions impacted our household. A dear friend (with twins and a toddler) gave me this 2 weeks after my first child was born and I have since passed on the advice to numerous friends.

The simple review of this book is that.....IT WORKS! The principles help you to organize your babys sleep and wake times. Best of all---when they cry you learn quickly exactly WHY! You know when they are hungry--you know when they are sleepy.

Your baby will eat full feedings and not "snack" which gives them full bellys to sleep a full nap period.

In a nutshell...........this is simple advice....but timeless. If you follow it consitently......your baby WILL sleep through the night by about 9-10 weeks. BLISS!!!

Enjoy these precious times!

Good book, GREAT premise

The importance of making and keeping your baby on schedule that this book stresses was priceless to me. It outlined the basic guidelines and several examples and "what ifs" but in the heat of the moment, I felt it was a little vague. (Maybe wanting a what-to-do-in-every-situation-book was a little unrealistic .....) Overall though, in the sea of baby books, I would buy this one again.
