A most pleasurable read

I had to think for a while about whether to rate this novel with a 4-star or 5-star review, but chose the 5-star for the sheer pleasure of reading it. I don't consider it to be a modern masterpiece, though it was one of the most enjoyable reading experiences I have had. Yes, it is definitely male fantasy all the way, especially in the dinner scene about 2/3 of the way through the novel. Yes it is filled with improbable chance events that are probably necessary for the overall plot. Yet, there are some delicious surprises that bring a smile or a gasp, though it is very obvious where the novel is headed. Also, I feel that there are some parts of the book, especially those involving his work environment, that border on farce and inanity. However, the characters are so wonderfully drawn and the plot is so beautifully paced that I finished the book in no time. It is a very easy read, though there is a lot of meat there. So if you want a break from the likes of Dostoevsky and Franz Kafka and wish to curl up with a breath of fresh male fantasy, I cannot recommend this book enough. What a delicious romance!

Beginners Greek has lots of characters, all beautifully drawn and well developed. This is a romance but more in the style of Jane Austin than daytime tv. The novel is well written and gives an insiders view of life in the upper east side. Loved every page of it!
