In depth and personal rendition of a criminal mind.
I've waited a long time for this book to come out. I am thrilled to have finally received it. This novel is definitely a "page-turner". We really get in the mind of a true
criminal
, Patrick Nee. Although the book renders Nee committing some vivid crimes, I can't help feel a certain remorse and empathy for Nee. Rich Farrell doesn't bore the reader with tedious crime facts, but focuses more on the pathological obsessions and struggles of a master criminal mind.

A
Criminal
And An
Irishman
is one of those rare books that captures your attention COMPLETELY for the duration of its 200 odd pages. It is a memoir, but it reads like a novel in the first person. It is a rare person that has a life that can provide enough interesting material for a good book, and Patrick Nee certainly belongs in that small, select group. Nee was a top associate of the South
Boston
mob
ster, James "Whitey" Bulger, the second most dangerous man in the world if you are to believe the FBI's most wanted list. Number one is Osama bin Laden. But Pat Nee is not Whitey Bulger, and that makes him all the more of a likable and relatable character in this book. The book covers the entirity of Nee's life, including his childhood in Ireland, growing up in South Boston, Joining the Marine Corps and fighting in Vietnam, fighting a gang war with Whitey Bulger, avenging the death of his brother, and finally, an epic scale plan to ship seven tons of weapons across the Atlantic to help the Irish Republican Army drive the British out of Ireland. Any one of these segments of Nee's life could be a decent book, but the cumulative effect of all of these events makes the book a barnburner, and the protagonist seem larger than life. Nee allows us into his private thoughts and memories, makes us feel as he felt. It is a rare book that can do that, and still be fast paced and exciting. Nee is indeed a Criminal and an Irishman, but by the end of the book he stripped away most of my perceptions about both groups and taught me what it was like to be a member of either.

Must read for Devil Dogs
I highly recommend this book. I love this book, it's hard to put down. I really enjoyed the fact that I could relate. When he talks about the Marines and being a Marine, he hits the nail right on the head. Being a Marine myself, when he speaks about the brotherhood throughout the book you can feel the
connection
. The way he opens up about his life and his family, I was moved. You get a sense of what drives him to do the things that he did. This isn't some made up
story
to keep you on the edge of your seat, this is real life. A life that most people don't understand. I would like to thank Patrick Nee for opening and allowing us to get a glimpse of his life. I was truely moved by his story and his cause.

I could not put it down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought this yesterday even though Publishers Weekly gave it a luke-warm review. I've read all the Southie books out this month-- this is the only that tells a
story
! It is history and I'm sure once word gets out "
Criminal
" will be a best seller!
