I am Especially Fond of This Book!
Mackenzie Allen Phillips is married to a godly woman and the father of four children. One weekend, he takes the kids on a camping trip, and the unthinkable happens. Mack is plunged in a world of despair, and a great sadness covers his life.
Four years later, he receives a mysterious invitation to return to the locale of this tragedy. Is this an invitation from the eternal God? Mack makes the trip up to The
Shack
, and his life changes forever.
Your life may change too, after you read this gripping story. Of the many books I've read in the past few years, this is definitely one of my favorites.
There are some strange ideas in this book about the Trinity, and there is a mysterious antipathy toward rules and regulations and hierarchy. Not everything in this book is in accordance with my understanding of the Bible and Christian theology.
But the book does an awesome job of portraying God's love for humanity and His desire to have fellowship with us. This book struck a chord in my life, and I have a special fondness for it, as God does for us all. Meet with God in The Shack and get ready for an unforgettable experience!

This is a great book about relationship. It is about you loving God and God loving you. It is about sharing your life together as you would with your best friend who lives down the street. Don't get caught up in theology or it may trip you up in getting what you need out of this book. It is fiction and it is kind of outside the box.
The Shack
I enjoyed this as a fictional work, very interesting story. I agreed mostly with his theology. I listened to the audio book and there was one area I would like to review because I am not sure if he was just saying God loves everyone, no matter race or color or religion. Which I would agree with or if he had a no matter what religion you can go to heaven. Which I would not agree with. It is a personal relationship to Christ that gets you to heaven. Theologically, (is that a word?) I don't think it is smart to only focus on one attibute of God. In this case, His love, what about His holiness? and other attubutes?

The Shack
A friend I deeply admire wanted me to read this book, so I was excited to do it. However, I really didn't like it. I found his illustrations of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to be oddly stereotypical. His view of God the Father is particularly small, even though the author seemed proud of his deep understanding and creativity. He sees the Father as a benovolent grandmother that's only good for cooking and understanding. While his picture of wisdom was much more profound.
The worst part of the book was the sad nod to forgiving one's earthly father. You can easily tell that the author has no idea how to do it, so he hid it in an allegory that takes all the work out of forgiveness. It's a shame, because the world needs to know how to forgive those closest to us.
He seems to bash seminary training -- which is interesting. I only went to a 3 year Bible College, and he really didn't have anything new to say to me. His thoughts, while deep, are pretty elementary.
Read the book. It may challenge your stereotypes of God or help you understand why there is pain in the world. But if you don't question those things, save it for a weekend when you do.
