Really a Keeper
This book really stayed with me. I originally took it out of the library because I wasn't sure how I'd react to the story. All I knew was that the subject matter, the life of
Christ
-starting from boyhood-told from the viewpoint of his best friend, was something that struck me as intriguing. It not only made me curious as to how an author would handle an idea like that, it also surprised me that it looked as if the story was being told with a large amount of humor.
I had never read a book by Christopher Moore before. Normally I read books with a serious tone, and I'm a huge fan of vampire fiction. A friend bought me a copy of BLOODSUCKING FIENDS, in an attempt, I think, to introduce me to reading where I could "lighten up." Now curious, I sought out other books by Moore. The one I chose to read first was
LAMB
. Even though there was indeed much of the book where I did giggle (the part with Lazarus had me outright laughing, and replaying in my head for days) all of the seriousness and sorrowful elements of Jesus' life was dealt with as well in this book. I mean, we know how the story ends, and it is far from comical. I found nothing in this book offensive, and thought Moore handled his portrayal of Jesus with respect. He also made it believable since Jesus did indeed start life as a human being-granted, the most special kind-but human nontheless.
Since early
childhood
, I have always been involved in a book. Only a handful have made me laugh. Only one had me cry. This one is the first that had done both. When a book moves you that much, and stays with you so strongly, how can you not own it?

Lamb is the Funniest Book Ever
This is by far, the funniest book that I have ever read. The author never strays from the fact that Joshua is the Son of God but brings humor to Joshua's life and gives the reader a fictional look at the human side of
Christ
. Reading
Lamb
actually has brought me closer to God because of a peek (although fictional) into Joshua's time here on earth.
Heartfelt, insightful, and one of the funniest books I've ever read
This book is great. After the hillarious Practical Demonkeeping, I was expecting a really funny book, but I had no idea I would enjoy this so much. Every ounce of it is written with whit and its packed with more puns, irony and great one liners then can be found anywhere else.
Moore comes up with an excellent idea in filling the missing gap of Jesus'(actually Yeshua or Joshua as he is called in the book) life between birth and in his thirties. The POV of
Lamb
, and the one chosen to write this
gospel
is Levi who is called
Biff
,
Christ
's best friend. Biff is resurrected sometime after the new millenium and under orders of Christ himself, he provides a wonderfully detailed gospel. Of course, he doesn't have much of a choice as he has been kidnapped by the angel who resurrected him and forced to write in a hotel room while said angel watches soap operas.
The first part of the book has so many laugh out loud moments that I had to stop reading it in front of people because I kept getting weird looks. That humor maintains throughout Lamb, but as the story progresses it becomes surprisingly heartfelt and you can tell that Moore isn't writing the book as a mockery of the New Testament, but as a "what if" that happens to be really funny. He admits himself that most of the story is made up as no one really knows what Jesus did during the lost 20+ years, but its as plausible as anything else someone could come up with. And despite the fact that this is humorous fiction, you can actually learn quite a bit about the time period. He inserts all kinds of facts about what life was like in Jerusalem during the 1st century as well as in the East, where Joshua and Biff went to seek the three wisemen and learn from their ways.
To summarize, this story has everything: humor, insight, Chinese concubines, martial arts, elephants that do yoga all in a great epic tale. We learn how sarcasm was invented, as well as who first thought to flavor coffee with milk (that was Biff.) And one of my favorite parts is a nice tie in to Practical Demonkeeping. This will go on my shelf and remain one of my favorite books of all time. Read this book and give it to everyone you know that reads. Regardless of weather or not you are religous, everyone can get something out of Lamb.

OMG
I have to say that I laughed while reading this book, it truly is funny. Did it reaffirm my faith? Not really, but it's kind of cool to think that the Son of God had a sense of humor and a devilish sidekick.
Christopher Moore Graduates!
I have read all of Chris' books to date and at this stage in his writing, he has definitely graduated into his own with "
Lamb
". Lamb is a wonderful read for both the religious and the non-religious. It chronicles the life of
Christ
from his early
childhood
up until his death. Since the adolescent portion of Christ's life isn't written about in the bible, too many of us can only surmise what had happened during those 'growing years'. In Lamb, we get to see those years through the
gospel
written by Christ's best friend; who was ressurected over 2000 years later.
Lamb is filled with wonderful characters that will fill the reader with laughter and sometimes make them go "hmmm". Interspersed throughout the story readers will find powerful quotes that should hit home as they come across them. The story flows very well from start to finish. The gaps are minor, the pauses to let the readers know what
Biff
and the angel are doing in modern times are hilarious, and the ending in itself was a nice touch. Excellent book!
