In my all time top 10 movies!
Given poor reviews when first released, I now realize that the "critics" did not understand the movie. This movie is a wonderful love story, of sorrow, loss, and the infinate nature of love. The acting is surpurb, but it's the story that makes this (not a "must see" but) a "must experience."
Beautiful and REAL
No other movie out there is as conforting for the soul as this one. All the transcending questions we have about where we
come
from, where we're going and why we're here, are amazingly portrayed in this movie. The plot gives us hope by showing that God does not punish, there's no judgement, hell is not eternal and everyone deserves a second chance (reincarnation).A tremendous achievement on screen!!!

Visually beautiful, theologically odd and romantic
This one is probably one of those real love it or hate it films. In some ways, throughout, it can be very depressing as a whole family evetually gets wiped out one way or another. But it's depictions of Heaven and Hell are visual marvels unlike many movies I have ever seen. There is the ultimate romance here - chasing ones family and soul mate through the afterlife, but like vampire movie -it's seems to make up its own rules about spirituality, Heaven, Hell, suicide to move the plot along. If you look past these things however, it's a visual and romantic feast.

Personally, I prefer 53 virgins
Milton in Paradise Lost has Lucifer say that the mind can make a hell of heaven or a heaven of hell. Apparently, someone decided to take that idea and run with it.
My biggest complaint was the depiction of the family. This family was the driving force behind the movie: husband and wife, father and daughter, father and son, mother and daughter. So, this needed to be a very good family. And they constantly TELL us how much they love each other, but the only scenes we are SHOWN are ones in which they are fighting with each other, arguing with each other or just being neutral (the exception is the first meeting between the two leads). According to studies in Sociology of the Family, one third of families are the fighting kind of family. Apparently, the screenwriter thought that by portraying this kind of family, he was portraying a good family. Unfortunately, the other two thirds won't be impressed. So, for us the movie falls flat.
A word about the myth-metaphysic: it must take a megalomaniac to undertake the paint of picture of heaven and hell. Personally, I didn't care for either as here portrayed. Probably this is why Islam will prevail. Islam doesn't footsy around with heavenly choirs or with paint, water and goo. It cuts to the chase and promises everyone 53 virgins when they die. Now, there's a religion that knows where it's at!
