A tool for the journey
As an ordained Episcopal priest I often walk with parishioners through the "valley of the shadow of death" and this book is a compass to guide care givers along the sometimes confusing and almost always painful path. It offers concrete, positive, loving suggestions on how to assist loved ones on the journey from this side to the other side.
Ministering to the dying
Written by two Hospice nurses who give examples of terminally ill patients and how and what we should look for in their body language as well as their verbal language; everything is clearly explained, ie; when the patient appears to be hallucinating or reacting to drugs, they can be actually experiencing their
needs
; they can "see" people who have gone on before them, they recognize their time "is up" and some even predict the day they will die. From this book we can learn how to talk to the patient, how to recognize signs of "where they are" and ways to respond to their need & hopefully, give them some peace in their last days/hours
and eliminate some of their fears they may be going through.

I highly recommend this for anyone dealing with someone (or self) facing the end of life. It really helped me alot!
Final Gifts
Without doubt, this is the BEST book I've read on the subject of hospice,
dying
, and death. It made such a difference in
understanding
the process and the aftermath of a recent death in our family.
An essential read for understanding death & dying
This book is a solid reference for
understanding
what a
dying
person is experiencing and how to make the process the most peaceful and gratifying for all those involved in the care of a dying loved-one. I did not necessarily agree with some of the spiritual inferences (like people who do not believe in God or an afterlife having visions of heaven and being carried away on the wings of angels), but the observations and experiences of these Hospice nurses is the best thing anyone could do to understand how to be a faithful companion to the dying. I have given copies to many friends and relatives. I think the information is priceless in helping those around a dying person feel better prepared to handle this very important and also painful time in another persons life.
