Groundbreaking, but unfortunately way ahead of the times...

While the work in this book is excellent and the research both compelling and well defined, the techniques have yet to be approved as "standard diagnostics and treatment". This means the tests are not covered by many (most?) insurance plans -- especially not HMO's.

I work with one of the Dr. resources mentioned in the back of the book, but the HMO, Kaiser, he works for refuses to allow the studies (even though they have all the equipment in most of their facilities). However, they don't have the 3-D modeling software which _appears_ to be patented by Amen who has a financial interest keeping the process proprietary and expensive (like any good capitalist). While the scan itself might only "cost" $500, or less if the equipment and procedures were widely available, the interpretation of the data in a meaningful way for treatment has to be paid for out of pocket to the tune of $1500-$3000 dollars.

Psychology, as a field, is still in the early 20th century as far as diagnostics. I saw several Kaiser Psychiatrists who were incompetent in diagnosing my ADHD because it was of a particular subtype that they were not familiar with and is, according to my doctor, difficult to diagnose and treat.

It could be another 15 years or more, my MD estimates, before such tests are considered mainstream diagnostic tools. Most psych's, I have found, are woefully underinformed when it comes to Adult AD[H]D and are prejudiced against diagnosing it due to the perceived "abuse" threat of the medications -- even though it's fairly well known that the major sources of amphetamines on the street come from large scale batches mixed up in people's bathtubs. Prescriptions for AD[H]D as a source for amphetamine abuse are a red herring (this from my doctor who has worked with the author of the book).

If you can get your psych to read the book and get your carrier to cover the tests, it can help everyone...

This book gets to the root

People can spend years in therapy and never resolve behavior issues. However, Dr. Amens work looks at the organ that should be examined first when behavior problems arise. The brain.

Our society still insists that emotional or behavioral problems are either your fault or the result of some past emotional trauma. They can just as easily be the result of a past injury to the head, or the genetic configuration of the brain. A lifetime of therapy will accomplish nothing if the root cause is not determined.

He gives real life examples of people who have had their lives changed and healed as a result of his techniques.

Anyone who has suffered in a relationship with someone with ADD will begin to understand what it is all about. Hopefully someday, our society will advance enough so that brain disfunctions will be as easily diagnosed and treated as diabetes and thyroid conditions. It will avoid enormous heartache for both people with ADD and their families.

So if you are fighting this battle, don't waste money on talk therapy until you explore the medical needs of your ADDer. Once they are treated by a competent physician, you will be amazed at how many of the relationship and behavior "issues" go away.

As for those who choose to look at ADD as a gift or refuse to address the very real problems it can cause lest the ADDer be stigmatized. That is about as wise as refusing to wear glasses to assist your genetically weak eyesight. Of course you can choose to do that, but you will continue to fumble throught the world in a fog while the rest put on our glasses and enjoy the beauty of the world around us. It is your choice.

It explains a lot

If you think you're going to hand this book to someone with severe ADD and suddenly they will be better, well think again. But if you want to understand ADD (The book might be better titled Understanding ADD than Healing ADD) this book can be a great help. If you've ever wondered why a stimulant can help someone who is bouncing off the walls, this is the book for you.

Excellent Resource

Dr. Amen's book is an excellent resource. He spells out so many simple ways to change ones life to better cope with ADHD, as well as providing information necessary for understanding ADHD itself. As a mother of an ADHD son, and wife of an ADHD husband this book helped myself and my non-ADHD child understand what our guys were experiencing.
