A star-crossed romantic comedy - really enjoyed it!

Vanity Fair recommended this book so I couldn't not read it. I have to admit that the style of the prologue struck me as a bit awkward, but I persevered and am very glad that I did. I haven't enjoyed a book of contemporary fiction this much since Julian Fellow's Snobs: A Novel. Yes, Beginner's Greek is about the rich and beautiful people -- but who doesn't love reading about this dazzling set? And as a die-hard romantic, the underlying theme of true love made this witty, intelligent, star-crossed love quadrangle of a comedy even better.

Great fun and a quick read

I hope someone able has optioned this for the movies. As a comedy of manners, it works delightfully well and serves as an example of how even cliches can become refreshed in the hands of a good wordsmith. It's frothy romance mixed with expected complications, and just wicked enough to keep up with its own pace as a page turner.

Fun Read But Needed Editing

James Collins, former editor at Time magazine, writes his first novel with BEGINNER'S GREEK. The story focuses on Peter, who meets Holly on a cross country plane flight. They get to talking and Peter falls for her. She gives him her number and they hope to meet up.

Unfortunately, Peter loses the number and is heartbroken.

Will he be able to find her? Will true love win out?

Since I'm only describing the prologue, you better hope something happens. There are still 400 pages to go.

Storywise, this is a very entertaining story. The characters are likable, it is relatively fast paced. I managed to read it in an afternoon.

The only problem has to do with the Collins writing style. He sometimes spends a page on talking about something that should only take a sentence or two. (And he used to be an editor??). If he had trimmed this down (it could have easily been half the length it is without losing anything) he would have a must read.

It still is a fun read. Well worth picking up.
