Enthralling
It's not hard to imagine more subtle sets and costumes. Yet these, despite their obviousness, are never less than effective. The performance is all one could wish. I've never arrived at a convincing interpretation of this mysterious work. It's the most magical and ...

Captures the spirit of Bayreuth
There are many videos of Bayreuth performances, but this was the first. For that reason alone, it's worth watching; fortunately it isn't the only reason. Unlike later recordings, this one includes curtain calls. I think this was an excellent decision, since it ...

Mike was Right
Once again Mike Birman has written such an ample and enticing review of this filmed opera that I feel no obligation to do more than refer you to him. In fact, I bought this DVD on Mike's recommendation, and I'm grateful. I'm hardly a steady booster of Richard Wagner; ...

Wonderful
Wagner the way he would have wanted it done. Great singing, fantastic stagecraft and Levine is in top form.

Absolutely Magnificent
In many ways this by far the best Ring on DVD and I have had three others and parts of a fourth. One, the Levine, I gave away. While updated to the 20th century, this is NOT Euro-trash and all in all as drama it works splendidly, particularly in the so called "boring ...

Another wonderful Tristan
After getting the video of the Ponnelle/Barenboim/Johanna Meier "Tristan und Isolde" which was delisted many years ago, and while I was waiting for it to come out on DVD cleaned up with a better quality of sound, I bought other versions. For my taste, I found them all ...

Yet Another Wonderful Tristan
In July, 2007, I started my review of the Barenboim/Ponnelle Tristan und Isolde with the following: "Tristan Und Isolde is doubtless one of the greatest operas ever written. Unfortunately it has been very badly served by the currently available productions on DVD." I ...

HOME RUN FOR BOHM AND BEETHOVEN !!!
I have watched several different DVD productions of "FIDELIO" and have owned a couple but this 1970 performance is the GREATEST and most fulfilling which I have experienced! I have had the great joy of being at several live performances at the Metropolitan Opera of ...
Wagner: Lohengrin
Deutsche Grammophon, 2008
Magical and Mysterious
This is perhaps the most mysterious and magical production of Lohengrin on DVD. It is aptly interpreted, there are some great visual effects throughout using smoke, lighting and scenery. It is still a traditional rendering, but with a little more emphasis on the ...

An inspired production
This is indeed a very satisfying performance of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. It is a performance filmed on the stage of Bayreuth, but without the audience, in order to give the camera a greater freedom of movement. The staging of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, shows you clearly ...

An Italian Treasure Box
The common denominator of these three productions is the superior widescreen picture quality, and with the exception of one bad apple the superior 5.1 surround sound quality. The first to appear was the Nabucco. There seems to be a consensus among the reviewers that ...

This Is Just Great
I recommend this DVD. I've heard and liked the music from Lohengrin for decades. I knew the story etc, but didn't understand how specific songs fit in the opera's action. I finally decided to get the opera on DVD so that I could understand how it all fit together, ...

Rediscovering another 20th Century Russian Composer-Conductor
The 1960's seemed to offer a cornucopia of fine Conductors whose names are now legendary. When you are exposed to the likes of Karajan, Bernstein, Solti, Giulini, Bohm, Klemperer, Boult, Boulez and others, the field gets crowded and some worthy Conductors are ...

A Minimalist Tannhäuser, Beautifully Staged, Sung and Played
I basically agree with the foregoing written by C. Boerger -- and urge you to read his more extensive review -- except that the cut in the beginning of the opera doesn't bother me in the least if only because what remains is so wonderfully done that I quickly forgot ...

Not Quite "Reduced Shakespeare"
I expected a cast, some acting and Wagnerian singing, not a single comedian/singer with a five piece band. In the spirit of, perhaps, an Anna Russell performance, it did deliver its 80 minutes of hilarity. Viewing was a very enjoyable experience.
