Rachmaninov, Ashkenazy and Previn Again?!
The playing on this CD is worthy of five stars, but Universal gets a one-star demerit for releasing these works too many times. If you want one CD of Ashkenazy & Previn playing a couple of Rachmaninov Piano Concertos, then you buy the Penguin Classics title. If you ...

One of the best CD I own
This is one of the best I own. The music is so great, hard to explain...so moving, especially the first track. It reminds me of Russia a lot. I listen to it everyday while driving to work. I highly recommend it.

An absolute stunner
I've spent years working on these pieces as an amateur. In fact, collecting recordings of these concertos has been one of my greatest enthusiasms. Having heard practically all the commercially available recordings (and some) out there, I can only bow down to Stephen ...

This is a beautiful work by the master composer Rachmaninoff. I have been a fan of his work, but when I heard this recording it nearly blew me away. Listen to Vocalise - the beauty of this track is what sold me on the rest of the album.

I really like this
I heard this on a pair of Magneplanars at an audio shop, and then we listened to it on some other high end gear. That did it for me, had to have it. Very good recording, excellent sound and performance. Intriguing approach to recording.

Everything remembered and wanted on strings
To me, it is an extraordinary combination demonstarting the old world beauty and timeless artistry of the violin. It will take you back to everything good remembered, and forward to everything good ahead of us.

Spellbinding
Martha Argerich is a magnificent pianist. She is a force of nature. Her physicality is commanding and brilliant. Her unique interpretations are bold and compelling. Unlike many CDs, the fact the recording is of a "live" performance, does not detract from its impact. I ...

Ormandy and Reiner Show How It's Done
Sergei Rachmaninoff was tormented by many demons. Following the failure of his First Symphony (1897), he plunged into a harrowing depression, from which he never fully recovered. Its practical manifestation was a ruthless second-guessing of his own abilities as a ...

Superb performances of both concertos
Alexis Weissenberg, athough not as well known as some celebrity pianists, was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century -- perhaps THE greatest in performing music from the Romantic era, such as these two deservedly popular concertos. It is notable that the ...

The best recording of the Rachmaninov songs at an unbeatably low price
If one loves Rachmaninov and doesn't know his songs, one is missing a LOT! They are every bit as important, richly detailed and appealing as anything in his oeuvre. As is the case with all composers of "art song," only a handful of Rachmaninov's 85 songs are performed ...
