Breathtaking, magnificent....A MUST HAVE!!!
This is no doubt, a great CD by a great diva and a great composer...period. It's jazz singing at its very finest, with the most beautiful nuances and vocalization you'll probably ever hear. Jessye Norman, one of my favorite Sieglinde's, Ariadnes, and Kundry's, sings ...

dont buy this...its almost as bad as "ron carter meets bach"
ron carter is so convinced of his own genius that he believes that hiring an orchestra to play bach while he noodles around without giving a thought to intonation, phrasing, or any sense of musicality somehow constitutes art.

The Different Drummer We Once Were
I bought this album because of a memory, but the music stands up remarkably well to a more objective listening. It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th ...

This needs a more articulate review...
To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression ...

i'm not sure why amazon lists this cd under chuck israels's name, a bass player who appears with a drummer on 2 or 3 numbers. i'm also not sure why the kronos quartet took hits for recording the music of monk. monk's music works well with a string quartet. ron ...

Sublime
I'll add my praises of this disc to all the others. I fell totally in LOVE with Bossa Nova back in high school. I collected everything I could, from Best of Sergio Mendes - which is also very highly recommended to those who love this genre- to Joao Gilberto. In fact I ...

Another fantastic jazz/classical hybrid!
I loved the CJQ's Bach and Nutcracker CDs, so I very anxiously anticipated this one, and I was not disappointed. If anything, this CD is even more spirited than th previous two - Stefon and Kenny in particular sound like they're having a blast. VERY highly recommended!

I first heard this group on an NPR interview a long time ago, when the ablum first came out. I immediately ordered the CD. I love "So What" and "Eleanor Rigby" but the whole album is great. Very Moody...

Koch Int'l Classics, 1998
Even Elliott Carter himself had forgotten about these nine choral pieces, written between 1936 and 1947. When conductor John Oliver recently proposed to "resurrect" them, Carter insisted he must first hear them to dispel lingering doubts about their worthiness. "Not as bad as I remembered," he proclaimed regarding "Let's Be Gay," a 1937 work for ...

Beautifully sung
This is a superb album, probably one of the best operatic singer + jazz trio combinations to be released (certainly a lot more successful than some of the more well known ones - think 'Kiri Sings Gershwin'... this is just in another league). Jessye Norman's gorgeous, ...
