One of the best CD I own
This is one of the best I own. The music is so great, hard to explain...so moving, especially the first track. It reminds me of Russia a lot. I listen to it everyday while driving to work. I highly recommend it.

Hauntingly Beautiful Opera
Kaija Saariaho is rapidly becoming one of the more daring and creative of our current crop of contemporary composers. Hailing from Finland, she has good colleagues in this country who consistently provide audiences with the rare beauties of her compositions. One of ...

Postmodern Polyphony
Reading this bunch of intelligent reviews for John Adam's work is a great experience. No one seems to be bored by this score and the music intonates lots of different feelings. Personally I find this music a masterpiece. Not because of all the obvious skill ...

How rich the Nordic realm!
Kaija Saariaho is well known to Los Angeles audiences as her fellow countryman and music spiritual partner Esa-Pekka Salonen has provided many performances of this gifted composer's output in the Los Angeles Philharmonic's seasons. It is well to hear these two ...

Great for what it is
I agree with the previous poster that this does not contain his great dramatic stuff like otello/wagner, but the collection is a beautiful one. There are some great recordings here, and his crossover stuff(maria, Dulcinea, impossible dream) is very interesting. His ...

Excellent
This CD begins with an energetic Mephisto Waltz, flawlessly conducted with a minute and meticulous attention to detail by the illustrious Eugene Ormandy. The waltz is followed by the first momvement of Liszt's first piano concerto, a foreboding, majestic monument to ...

amazing
Classic Wynton is the most glorious display of musicianship I have ever heard. No other trumpet player even comes close to Wynton. Don't listen to anything the editorial review says though, it must have been written by a complete ignoramus. Wynton Marsalis not having a ...

Great style
As a concert pianist myself I can say "Brava!!!" I have heard almost all recorded versions of the Choral Fantasy by Beethoven as well as several live performances. Grimaud's sense of style, rhythm and form is superb! I highly recommend her recording as the best on the ...

Music for our time...and for all time
Witold Lutoslawski is by now assured a repertoire staple, in many ways thanks to the commitment of Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Of the many giants of 20th Century music few were as introspective and compelled to discover a mode of expressing the ...

Gleaming, Radiant Debussy from Esa-Pekka Salonen and Company
Fascinating as it has been hearing Esa-Pekka Salonen develop his repertoire during his tenure with the Los Angeles Philharmonic - a repertoire that spreads from the High Romantics through the 20th Century masterworks to the works being composed today - it is still ...

lutoslawski's best
I'm a great fan of Lutoslawski's work. That said, Esa Pekka Salonen has assembled a great catalog and sample of Lutoslawski's compositional voice. This work includes the previously recorded 2nd symphony (from the middle period), and his early Concerto for ...
