Nancarrow without the player piano: an essential addition to our knowledge of the composer
This is the reissue of a recording made in 1989 and first released in 1991 by Musicmasters. See my lengthy review under the original release (Continuum Performs Nancarrow). It is an essential addition to our knowledge and understanding of Nancarrow, as it documents ...

How Could You Not Listen?
My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of ...

No flavor of the month, just great music
I probably wouldn't have purchased this cd if I hadn't read Terry Teachout's arts blog, on which he recommends it highly. (He also wrote the liner notes for it; they're mostly informative and insightful, although I was annoyed by his efforts to remind us (a) that he ...

Excellent CD for it's place in history
This is a great CD. I'm glad I was able to find it used. Not all of the singing is to my liking but overall it's very nice. What is extremely good is the interpretations of each song. Each performers commitment to the text is worth whatever price you pay.

Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series
I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" ...

a good overview of Cowell's various compositional styles
This is the reissue of volume 2 of the Cowell collection played by the New York ensemble Continuum. The piano pieces, two songs and "Set of Five" were recorded in 1984 (only in the latter can the earlier date of recording be sensed, through a less vivid sonic pickup) ...

Different Jewish Music
This CD consists of "real" classical music. The music of this CD is classical suites INSPIRED by Klezmer Music. It is a really neat collection. My favourite pieces are Manginot and Hakdashot because they feature the bass clarinet, a rarity in solo music. This is a ...

Fascinating . . .
Usually I read the liner notes before listening to a new recording. I did not do so with this disc. I popped it into the car stereo and was soon asking myself, "What the heck is THIS?" Coming out of the speakers was a strange mixture of a wordless chorus and tiny, ...

Enjoyable
Paul Moravec's composition is very enjoyable overall. I heard this piece performed live, and the recording is just as beautiful as the live performance. I'm not a musician, but I enjoy classical music. While I don't have the proper musical terminology to fully ...

Almost Too Good
I often reflect on why classical music votaries settle for or even prefer old analogue recordings and what are euphemistically called "vintage" recordings. The reason seems obvious - many lovers of classical music are old and stupid, and still others love analogue ...

The quintet is for the same instrumentation employed to such great effect by Beethoven's predecessor, Mozart. Meg Bachman Vas makes her recording debut with New York Philomusica Records in an ebullient and poetic account of the work, lovingly supported and enveloped by her woodwind collaborators. Todd Phillips fully realizes the extraordinary ...
